Entering
the day down four points, the East team stormed back to win seven
of the 10 available points during the morning foursome matches
on the second day of Canon Cup. The East’s morning run pulls
them into a tie with the West at 12 ½ points apiece with
a day and a half remaining in the 2004 Canon Cup.
One key point came
for the East from the match featuring East teammates and fellow
Floridians Brittany Lincicome of Seminole and Morgan Pressel of
Boca Raton who won 4 and 3 over Amanda Blumenherst of Scottsdale,
Ariz., and Paula Creamer of Pleasanton, Calif.
Lincicome and Pressel
used birdies on Nos. 7, 8 and 9 to jumpstart their round and earn
a two-point advantage over the West heading to the back nine.
“Today we hit
every shot well,” Pressel said. “We had six birdies
and that’s hard to do in alternate shot. It’s not
like they lost it, we went out and we beat them.”
Lincicome and Pressel
virtually closed the door with another birdie on No. 14. Lincicome
stuck her approach to five feet, and Pressel took advantage of
the opportunity by draining the birdie putt. The two teams halved
No. 15 to give the East the win and a crucial point.
Webb Simpson of Raleigh,
N.C., and Jarred Texter of Millersville, Pa., also won 4 and 3
in their match against Philip Francis of Scottsdle, Ariz., and
Jamie Lovemark of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
After both teams bogeyed
the first hole, Simpson and Texter birdied No. 2 before the West
eagled No. 3 to return the match to all-square. The match ended
when the East birdied Nos. 13 and 14 and the West bogeyed No.
15 to give the East the 4 and 3 victory.
“It was kind
of a rocky start but after that we played pretty solid out there,”
Simpson said. “We had six birdies which is tough to do in
alternate shot.”
