Grayhawk Golf Club - Raptor Course Since opening in 1994, grayhawk Golf Club's two 18-hole golf courses – Talon and Raptor – have generally been considered some of the finest in the Southwest and have gained a lion's share of national honors during their relatively short histories.
In fact, Grayhawk has become a popular location for local and national events, activities and tournaments such as the Thunderbird International Junior. Grayhawk hosted Tiger Woods' 2000 Williams World Challenge and the semifinals and finals of the Andersen Consulting World Championship of Golf. Grayhawk has also played host to a number of prestigious amateur events, including the Southwestern Amateur and the AJGA Arizona Junior Classic, captured by 1999 Rolex Junior Player of the Year Hunter Mahan seven years ago with an even-par 144. The Junior Golf Association of Arizona also holds events at Grayhawk. Designed by famed golf course designer Tom Fazio, Raptor will again serve as the host course of the Thunderbird International Junior. Raptor is a true "player's course," reminiscent of the classic traditional designs of the old masters like Donald Ross and Alister MacKenzie, where shot selection and game strategy are the keys to scoring well. The Raptor's Finishing Hole, "Big Sky" could provide an exciting finish to the event.
The 7,113-yard, par-72 golf course meanders over gentle hills and across deep natural arroyos that are typical of the Sonoran Desert. The course features panoramic views of the nearby McDowell Mountains and skirts thick stands of giant saguaros, palo verdes, ironwoods and mesquite trees that were preserved when the golf course was created. Anchoring Grayhawk Golf Club is its handsome 40,000 square foot clubhouse. Widely recognized for the beauty and functionality of its design, the clubhouse sets the stage for the Grayhawk golf and community experience. The clubhouse is home to Grayhawk's Golf Shop and Trading Company, selected as one of "America's 100 Best Golf Shops" by Golf Business Magazine. Along with the golf shop, the facility houses Quill Creek Cafe, a popular Scottsdale restaurant with seating for up to 300; Phil's Grill, a more casual eating establishment that was named for Grayhawk's PGA TOUR ambassador Phil Mickelson; several meeting rooms; and a 7,000 square-foot multi-use pavilion called the Fairway House, which accommodates special functions such as corporate meetings, private dinners, weddings, parties and other social activities. In addition, Grayhawk is represented by some of golf's most prolific players from the pro tours, including: Phil Mickelson, Howard Twitty, Gary McCord and Peter Kostis, Together with the AJGA, The Thunderbirds and Phil and Amy Mickelson, Grayhawk is honored to have helped in the formation of the Thunderbird International Junior. The AJGA players are the best juniors in the world, and Grayhawk Golf Club welcomes this opportunity to show its support of junior golf and the future of the game.
