Making a run at the No. 1 seed, Kimberly Kim shot 5-under in the first round of stroke play qualifying.

REUNION, Fla. -- Kimberly Kim of Pahoa, Hawaii, shot a 5-under-par 67 in the first round of the Polo Golf Junior Classic, making five birdies and no bogeys on the Independence (Watson) Course.

Cory Whitsett finishes his first round at the Polo Golf Junior Classic with a share of the lead.

REUNION, Fla. -- Cory Whitsett of Houston owns a share of the lead Monday after the first round of the Polo Golf Junior Classic. With eight birdies on the day, Whitsett finished 6-under-par and is tied for first with Luke Guthrie of Quincy, Ill., whose seven birdies helped lift him to this position. After day one, 44 boys sit at par or better. The 82-player Boys Division compiled a 72.5 stroke average on the Legacy (Palmer) Course.

Pontus Widegren of Danderyd, Sweden, is on top early during the first round of the Polo Golf Junior Classic.

REUNION, Fla. -- Pontus Widegren of Danderyd, Sweden, is in a familiar position as he is atop the leaderboard during the Polo Golf Junior Classic. Widegren also led during the first round of the Junior PLAYERS Championship held over Labor Day Weekend. Josh Jones of The Colony, Texas, is tied and hoping for a strong finish to the first round.

In the Girls Division, Kyndall Ardoin of Gibsland, La., is sitting pretty with a one shot lead during the first round. Jaclyn Sweeney of Bradenton, Fla., is 3-under-par and alone in second.

REUNION, Fla. -- The first round of the 30th Polo Golf Junior Classic began Monday on the Independence and Legacy Courses at Ginn Reunion Resort. Eighty-two boys and 78 girls will attempt to qualify for match play during Monday and Tuesday's stroke play qualifying rounds.
