It’s a girls only affair at the White Manor Country Club this week, as the nation’s top girl junior golfers compete in the 20th annual McDonald’s Betsy Rawls Girls Championship.
After two decades of excellence, the event has grown to be one of the premier events in all of junior golf. The event boasts an impressive list of past champions, including LPGA Tour members Grace Park (1993-94, 1996-97), Cristie Kerr (1995), Beth Bauer (1998) and Morgan Pressel (2005).
Allie White |
Year after year, the tournament field is showered with some of the best names in junior golf, all vying to take home the prestigious title and find a place in the winner’s circle. This year is no exception with a field of 78 top-ranked players and 21 Rolex All-Americans, all eager to take home the title.
As Vicky Hurst of Melbourne, Fla., will not be returning to defend her title, next in line is last year’s runner-up, Allie White of Lancaster, Ohio. She is off to a good start this season, tying for second at the Rolex Girls Junior Championship in June. She boasts three career wins including the Nationwide Insurance Junior presented by the Memorial Tournament in 2005, the Hudson Junior in 2006, and the Hudson Junior Championship in 2007. White, a two-time Rolex All-American and two-time HP Scholastic Junior All-American, has a total of nine top-five finishes to her name and is ranked No. 5 in the Polo Golf Rankings. She has signed a National Letter of Intent to play collegiate golf with the University of North Carolina in the fall.
Tiffany Lua |
White’s quest for the title will not go unmatched, as Tiffany Lua of Rowland Heights, Calif., will be returning to the McDonald’s Betsy Rawls Girls Championship for her third year. She placed third in 2007 finishing just behind White and took home fifth place in 2005. The three-time Rolex Junior All-American had recent success at the 2008 Thunderbird International Junior in May, where she placed second. Lua is currently ranked No. 6 in the Polo Golf Rankings, recording three top-seven finishes this season and 25 top-10 finishes in her career. She will look to add a third career win.
Victoria Tanco, of Bradenton, Fla., is coming off two impressive wins this season. Tanco took first at the 2008 Rolex Girls Junior Championship, her first-ever AJGA event, as well as at the 2008 Scott Robertson Memorial. She also recorded a third-place tie at the Orange Bowl International Golf Championship in 2007. Tanco is ranked No. 4 in the most recent Polo Golf Rankings.
Erynne Lee of Silverdale, Wash., will take her first shot at the title. Lee has placed in the top-10 at all five events she has competed in this season. She claimed her first victory at the Kathy Whitworth Invitational in March and recorded second-place ties at both the Rolex Girls Junior Championship and the AJGA Championship at Traditions earlier this season. Lee is currently ranked No. 8 in the Polo Golf Rankings.
All 78 girls have proven that they deserve to be here but only one can come out on top. It will be up to the girls to prove they are worthy of such a prestigious title and spot among the celebrated list of past champions. This year’s McDonald’s Betsy Rawls Girls Championship will be one for the history books. |
