WEST EXPANDS MARGIN TO EIGHT HEADING INTO FINAL DAY OF CANON CUP
East looks to stage final-day comeback at The Stanwich Club
GREENWICH , Conn . – The West Team came to play on day two of the Canon Cup, rallying to win 10 of 15 matches to take a commanding 19 – 11 lead heading into the final day at The Stanwich Club.
The American Junior Golf Association’s Canon Cup, now in its 19th year, brings together the nation’s top 40 juniors in an East versus West (divided by the Mississippi River ) team match play tournament. Each squad consists of 20 players – 10 boys and 10 girls – who were selected based on the Polo Golf Rankings that rewarded them for top finishes in national junior golf events. The event is being held at The Stanwich Club. In all-time competition, the West Team leads with a record of 9-8-1 .
The West Team dominated the morning foursome matches winning six outright and halving two others for a total of seven points. Tiffany Lua and Erynne Lee closed out Michelle Shin and Lindy Duncan on the 15th hole when Lee drained an 18-foot putt for birdie to seal the 4-and-3 victory for the West.
“We stayed positive out there the whole day and we worked really well off of each other,” Lua said. “We were never down at all in the match.”
“Hard-fought” is the best term to describe most of the West Team’s victories, as the rest of the matches were taken to at least the 16th hole. Cory Whitsett and Josh Jones trailed Sam Braver and Crawford Reeves for most of the day until Jones drained a birdie putt on No. 17 to go 1-up heading into the 18 th hole. Reeves and Braver responded by making par on the 18th hole to halve the match.
“We had to work really hard because we were down all day,” Whitsett said. “It was one of those days where we could have been three down through four really easily, but we at least fought for the halve.”
The West Team headed into the afternoon mixed four-ball matches leading 15 – 10 and never looked back, winning four out the five matches to lead 19 – 11.
Cameron Peck and Sydney Burlison led the charge on the West Team, closing out T.J. Vogel and Lindy Duncan 6 and 4. Peck credited the win to getting off to a hot start.
“We won the first four holes and it was hard for them to come back after that,” Peck said. “We’re looking forward to playing well tomorrow and keeping the cup for another year.”
Josh Jones and Kimberly Kim also rallied to beat Sam Braver and Alexis Thompson 5 and 4.
“I made a lot of clutch putts out there today,” Jones said. “Kim was just flagging it today. When she hit the flagstick from 200 yards away from a bunker, I knew it was going to be a good day.”
Singles matches will be Friday from 7 – 10:10 a.m. off the first tee with 20 points at stake.
