Alexis Thompson and Tessa Teachman celebrate Teachman's birdie on hole No. 8. The high fives kept coming for the
two East players - they combined for eight birdies and won their match 6 & 5.

The morning four ball matches are now complete, and the East Canon Cup team has sent a message to the West: we want the Cup.

Jordan Spieth and Anthony Paolucci earned a half point for the West team.

Going into the afternoon mixed foursome matches at The Stanwich Club, the East leads the West 6.5 to 3.5. The score can in part be attributed to some serious girl power on the East team - the East won three of the girls' matches and halved the fourth. Alexis Thompson of Coral Springs, Fla., and Tessa Teachman of Baton Rouge, La., combined for a total of eight birdies in 13 holes. Their solid play resulted in a 6 & 5 victory over Kimberly Kim of Pahoa, Hawaii, and Victoria Park of Irvine, Calif.

"We had each other's backs all day," Teachman said. "When one person missed a shot, the other covered with a good one."

Allie White of Lancaster, Ohio, and Victoria Tanco of Bradenton, Fla., followed suit, capturing their match against Rachel Morris of Carlsbad, Calif., and Jennifer Johnson of La Quinta, Calif., 6 & 5 as well.

West team member Cory Whitsett tees off in the first match of the day.

With three consecutive Canon Cups to their credit, the West team certainly cannot be counted out after the morning matches. The boys stepped it up for the West side, winning two matches and halving two more. Cory Whitsett of Houston, and Josh Jones of The Colony, Texas, soundly won their match against Luke Guthrie of Quincy, Ill., and Wesley Graham of Port Orange, Fla., 5 & 4. Part of the first match of the day, Jones admitted the two were nervous on the first hole but Whitsett was proud of how they recovered.

"We played smart and as a team, which is something we didn't do as well last year," Whitsett said.

Rak Cho of Brea, Calif., and Michael Jae Woo Im of Fullerton, Calif., combined for three birdies on Stanwich's difficult greens to win their match against Sam Braver of Roswell, Ga., and Austin Cody of North Charleston, S.C., 4 & 3.
