The West team continued its strong play during Thursday morning’s foursome matches, capturing seven points to take a 15-10 lead on the East squad.
The morning began with a spirited, hard-fought match between the West’s Josh Jones and Cory Whitsett and the East’s Sam Braver and Crawford Reeves. Braver and Reeves took the lead on the second hole and held on to it for most of the match. The tide began to turn on the par-5 No. 14 when Jones’ tee shot went into the water and Whitsett hit the follow-up approach to 12 feet. Jones drained the putt for birdie and the West team then went 1-up on No. 17. Crawford and Reeves responded, however, and made par on 18 to halve the match.
“They played really well; they put all the pressure on us so we had to work really hard,” Whitsett said. “We were down all day and it didn’t look like we were going to do much, so to at least get the halve was really important.”

The West claimed two more boys’matches and halved a third. Kevin Phelan and Austin Cody were the only victorious boys for the East, handily defeating Anthony Paolucci and Alex Kang 4 & 2.
“Kevin and I were just hitting fairways and greens and two-putting a lot,” said Cody. “They were playing well also, but we were just making a lot more putts.”
East team members Allie White and Victoria Tanco won the only girls’ match for the East, defeating Jennifer Johnson and Danielle Frasier. White and Tanco were 1-up heading to the 17th hole. White’s approach shot flew past the green, but Tanco chipped in to capture the third East point of the day.
In another exciting match, Rachel Morris and Jane Rah defeated Marika Lendl and Kristina Wong 2-up. The match went back and forth all morning. On No. 16, Morris and Rah made par to take a 1-up lead. On the 18 th hole, Morris chipped in from 15 feet for par and the full point went to the West.
“I was thinking about chipping it in and getting it close, so when it actually went in, it was awesome," Morris said. "Plus all my teammates were there cheering for me.”
Interestingly enough, the East was down 15-10 at this point in the Canon Cup in 2007. The West went on to capture four of the afternoon matches last year - can the East rewrite history and stage an afternoon comeback?
