For the past 20 years, the HP Boys Junior Championship has crowned champions that include some of the best names in golf. Jim Furyk, David Duval, Ty Tyron and Tiger Woods are all among this celebrated list, which continues to grow each year, as no one has ever been able to capture the title twice. Once again, the title is up for grabs as former champion Mu Hu will not be returning to defend his title, leaving 78 boys to battle it out in this 72-hole stroke play event.
This year’s field will provide an excellent competition as nine of the participants are Rolex Junior All-Americans and 20 have signed National Letters of Intent to play collegiate golf in the fall. The HP Boys Junior Championship is an international event, with players hailing from 22 states and Denmark. The field features 23 Florida natives, four of which call Orlando home.
Leading the field are three top players: Cameron Peck of Olympia, Wash., William Sjaichudin of Bradenton, Fla., and Kevin Phelan of St. Augustine, Fla. Peck is a rising senior who is currently ranked No. 9 in the Polo Golf Rankings. He has already won two tournaments this season, the Wellstone Communities Junior at Craig Ranch in April and the FootJoy Invitational in June. Sjaichudin is currently ranked No. 15 in the Polo Golf Rankings. He has started the season off strong, tying for fourth at the Mizuno Junior at Innisbrook in March and tying for second at the FootJoy Invitational. He has had five top-10 finishes throughout his AJGA career and is hoping to achieve his first victory at the HP Boys Junior Championship. Phelan is a rising senior who is currently ranked No. 25 in the Polo Golf Rankings. He scored his first career victory this March at the Mizuno Junior at Innisbrook.
The HP Boys Invitational is anyone’s for the taking and the participants are ready to compete. Each player has been hand-selected based on his talents and past performances and each has a shot at the trophy. The question is: who will take it home? |
