Stephanie Kim's 3-under-par 69 on the Independence (Watson) Course Monday put her in a tie for the lead


Jordan Spieth of Dallas, made the turn at 5-under-par on the Legacy (Palmer) course at the Polo Golf Junior Classic and didn't slow down after, carding four birdies on his back nine to top the leaderboard in the Boys Division at 8-under-par 64. Emiliano Grillo of Resistencia, Argentina, matched Spieth's total, spreading six birdies and an eagle throughout his round to tie for the lead. Cory Whitsett of Houston, and Evan Beck of Virginia Beach, Va., are tied for second at 7-under-par.

In the Girls Division, Jennifer Johnson of La Quinta, Calif., and Stephanie Kim of Orlando, Fla., are tied for the lead at 3-under-par. Johnson, the 2008 Rolex Tournament of Champions winner, carded four birdies and only one bogey, while Kim's steady round included three birdies, which helped her tie for the lead. Jane Rah of Torrance, Calif., Lauren Weaver of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Victoria Kiser of Orlando, Fla., are tied for third at 2-under-par.

Spieth, Johnson take early leads at Ginn Reunion Resort

Jordan Spieth of Dallas, Texas, and Jennifer Johnson of La Quinta, Calif., lead in their respective divisions as they make the turn in the first round of the Polo Golf Junior Classic.

Spieth, champion at The PING Invitational in October, is sitting at 5-under-par through 11 holes on the Legacy (Palmer) course while Johnson, victorious at the Rolex Tournament of Champions in July, leads by one shot at 3-under-par on the Independence (Watson) course.

Polo Golf Junior Classic Kicks off the 2009 AJGA Season

Juniors warm up on the driving range Monday in the shadow of Ginn Reunion Resort

Sunny skies and warm temperatures greeted the 78 boy and 78 girls that teed off Monday morning in the first round of the Polo Golf Junior Classic on Ginn Reunion Resort's Legacy (Palmer) and Independence (Watson) Courses

The juniors spent Saturday and Sunday navigating both courses in their practice rounds and will compete in two days of stroke play before the top 32 players in each division advance to three rounds of match play to determine a champion.

Six players in the Boys Division are tied at 3-under-par in the early going while Jennifer Johnson of La Quinta, Calif., and Ani Gulugian of Irvine, Calif., are tied at 3-under-par in the Girls Division.
