WEST LEADS CANON CUP BY EIGHT POINTS AFTER FIRST DAY
West squad takes 11 of 15 matches, leads 11.5 to 3.5
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — The West dominated Tuesday’s opening day at Canon Cup, winning seven of the 10 morning four-ball matches and four of the five afternoon mixed foursome matches. The West leads the East 11.5 to 3.5 going into Wednesday’s second day.
The American Junior Golf Association’s Canon Cup, now in its 20th year, brings together the nation’s top 40 juniors in an East versus West (divided by the Mississippi River ) team match play tournament. Each squad consisted of 20 players – 10 boys and 10 girls – who were selected based on the Polo Golf Rankings that rewarded them for top finishes in national junior golf events. This year, the event is being held at Forest Highlands Golf Club on the Canyon Course. The West Team leads the all-time competition with a 10-8-1 record.
While the West holds an impressive lead, it was no easy accomplishment. Eight of the 10 morning four-ball matches were taken all the way to No. 18.
“I am impressed by my team’s mental toughness and ability to finish off those tough morning matches,” said West Team Captain Jason Miller. “My hats off to the East Team for battling every match down to the wire.”
In the morning four-ball matches, Rachel Morris of Carlsbad, Calif., and Tiffany Lua of Rowland Heights, Calif., fought their way to victory. The girls needed to halve No. 18 to win their match, and Morris sat 50 feet from the hole on the back of the green. After consulting briefly with Lua, Morris drained the putt for birdie and claimed the point for the West.
“Tiffany told me the green broke left and so I just went for it,” Lua said. “It was one of the highlights of the day.”
Lua and Morris were not the only impressive rounds to come from the West Team. In the afternoon mixed foursome matches, Jane Rah of Torrance, Calif., and Austin Cook of Jonesboro, Ark., shut down Gavin Hall of Pittsford, N.Y., and Kelly Shon of Port Washington, N.Y., winning 2 and 1. The team credits its success to taking a different approach to the format than the rest of the field.
“We kept the mood light and just kept smiling,” Cook said. “We were pretty laid back and forgot we were playing golf, which is when you always play your best golf.”
Both teams enter Wednesday’s matches in good spirits and with high hopes.
“Today left me disappointed, but encouraged,” said East Team Captain Walker Hill. “I know my crew fought hard and having so many matches go to No. 18 shows that this competition is nowhere near over.”
Foursome matches will begin Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. off the first tee. The mixed four-ball matches will begin at 1:30 p.m. off the first tee.
In 1990 the inaugural Canon Cup featured then rising stars Tiger Woods and Emilee Klein representing the West Team, squaring off against Stewart Cink and Vicki Goetze of the East. Since then, notable juniors to represent the East include Charles Howell III, David Gossett and Casey Wittenberg. Alumni of the West Team include Ryan Moore, Grace Park and Paula Creamer.
