A new MJ in North Carolina...
MJ Maguire takes command early during the first round
The early leader has come from an early group. M.J. Maguire of St. Petersburg, Fla., teed off at 7 a.m. and set the bar high for the rest of the field. Despite a bogey on No. 1, Maguire rebounded with six birdies en route to a five-under-par 65. Ranked No. 51 in the Polo Golf Rankings, he already has a pair of top-five finishes in 2009, including a second-place finish at the AJGA Cliffs Championship.
A quartet of players is hot on his heels and sits one shot back. Rak Cho of Brea, Calif., carded a 30 on the front nine and held on to post a 66, while Ian McConnell of Riverview, Fla., has jumped near the top after birdies on three of his last four holes, and is also 4-under-par. Mario Clemens of Beverly Hills, Calif., and Jordan Spieth of Dallas, round out the foursome in second place.
