Staredown at Sedgefield...
McConnell and Spieth share third-round lead at 8-under-par

The top of the leaderboard is crowded, but there's room at the top for two players at 8-under-par. A four-foot par putt on No. 18 secured a bogey-free round of 67 for Ian McConnell, who surged to the top with his third consecutive round in the 60s. Jordan Spieth offset his birdies on Nos. 16 and 17 with bogeys on Nos. 15 and 18, which kept him tied with McConnell heading into Friday's final round.

Several other players worked their way up the leaderboard, including Richard Werenski, whose round of 67 moved him to within one shot of the lead. Jim Liu was in position to claim a spot in tomorrow's final group, but a double-bogey on the closing hole left him at 6-under-par and two shots back. In all, seven players are within three shots of the lead with 18 holes remaining.

The 54-hole cut came at 8-over-par, which is four shots lower than the cut in 2008. Sixty-three players advanced to the final round and will tee off in threesomes starting at 7 a.m.

Charge to the Top...
McConnell, Werenski challenging Spieth for third-round lead

Richard Werenski

Jordan Spieth still has the lead, but only by the slimest of margins. Front-nine charges by Ian McConnell of Riverdale, Fla., and Richard Werenski of South Hadley, Mass., have cut into Spieth's lead as the final groups make the turn.

With birdies on Nos. 7 and 9, McConnell is at 7-under-par and has remained bogey-free through 12 holes. Werenski used an eagle on No. 5 to jump start a 32 on the front nine and is two shots back at 6-under-par.

Spieth began the round with a three-shot cushion and has remained steady with 11 pars on the day. He's even-par through 13 holes, which has kept him at 8-under-par for the tournament.

The story of the morning came from the 8:10 a.m. tee time, as John Young Kim of Los Alamitos, Calif., went eagle-birdie-birdie on Nos. 14-16 to jump inside the projected cut line, which currently stands at 8-over-par. Fog adds another element to Sedgefield's challenges

Zachary Balit's tee shot on No. 1 at Sedgefield Country Club

What a difference a day makes. The rain clouds that produced a half-inch of rain overnight have passed, but they left a blanket of morning fog - a stark contrast to yesterday's blue skies (see the first update from the second round).

Tee times began as scheduled, so check FootJoy Live Scoring for the latest stats, blogs and videos from third round at the FootJoy Invitational.
