With Thanksgiving dinner still on the horizon for many of the participants at the Polo Golf Junior Classic, supper will taste a little better for the eight players that advanced to the semifinals. Both Rolex Junior Players of the Year are still in the hunt, as Jordan Spieth and Victoria Tanco closed out their second-round matches and won quarterfinal contests Thursday at PGA National Resort & Spa.
In the Boys Division, the first semifinal will pit Spieth, the current No. 1 player and reigning Rolex Junior Player of the Year, against Cory Whitsett, who held the No. 1 spot in the Polo Golf Rankings for several weeks in 2008. Spieth advanced to the semis after a 3-and-2 victory over Matthew Ceravolo. Whitsett defeated fellow Alabama-commit Bobby Wyatt in the quarters, 2 and 1, and will make his first semifinal appearance in his fourth trip to the Polo Golf Junior Classic.
Oliver Schniederjans and Cameron Wilson will battle in the second Boys semifinal. Schniederjans narrowly defeated co-medalist Emiliano Grillo, 1-up, while Cameron Wilson moved past Denny McCarthy, 5 and 3.
Two of the top three girls in the Polo Golf Rankings remain in the Girls bracket. Tanco survived her quarterfinal match against Tiffany Lim, 1-up, and she will face Kelly Shon, who defeated Simin Feng in the quarters, 5 and 4. On the other side, third-ranked Alexis Thompson cruised into the semifinals behind a 5-and-4 victory over Grace Na. A.J. Newell defeated Emma Talley, 2 and 1, and will face Thompson in the second Girls semifinal Friday morning.
Friday's quarterfinal matches will begin at 7:30 a.m., and the championship matches will immediately follow at approximately noon. Check the AJGA Blog and watch the V-blog for the latest news and highlights from the 32nd Polo Golf Junior Classic.
