College Round-up

Recently retired from the LPGA Tour, three-time first team Rolex Junior All-American Emilee Klein has accepted the head-coaching job at the University of Central Florida. Klein joined the LPGA in 1995 and ended her career with three professional victories. The 1991 Rolex Junior Player of the Year attended Arizona State University for two years before turning pro. The Orlando, Fla., native plans to continue her education at UCF while coaching.

Georgia State earned top honors Sunday with a one-stroke victory over the University of Florida at the Carpet Capital Collegiate. Clemson freshman David May had a second-place finish, helping the Tigers to a sixth-place team finish. The 2005 Rolex Junior All-American carded rounds of 68-74-65 207 to leave him at 9-under for the tournament. His final-round 65 was the second best by a freshman in Clemson history and his total of 207 tied the record for the best 54-hole tournament total by a freshman.

Maria Martinez led the Auburn Tigers to a one-shot victory on Sunday over the number one ranked Duke women’s golf team. After posting a final-round 68, Martinez, a 2000 Rolex Junior All-American, captured the nine-stroke victory over Tennessee freshman Nicole Smith and Alabama junior Jenny Suh.
Leading the second-place Blue Devils were former Rolex Junior All-Americans Amanda Blumenherst and Anna Grzebien. This was the first fall loss for Duke since November 2002.

Erik Flores

Erik Flores tied for second with a 4-under-par tournament total of 212 last week to help UCLA earn team honors at the CordeValle Collegiate. Teammates Daniel Im and James Lee finished tied for fourth.

Cal junior Michael Wilson earned individual medalist honors at the event. Posting rounds of 69-70-67 – 206, Wilson finished six strokes ahead of the pack.

Mark Cimarolli, a senior from the University of Ohio, earned medalist honors at the Big East/MAC Challenge…James Madison University’s Scott Marino won the ODU/Seascape Invitational by two strokes last week…University of Colorado senior Edward McGlasson shot 4-over-par to earn a one-stroke victory at the Tunica National Intercollegiate…Shawn Hall, a sophomore at Charleston Southern, won the Charleston Southern Fall Invitational last week in a playoff with teammate Nick Olson. Their top scores helped Charleston Southern walk away with the team victory…Xavier junior John Streibich led his team to a ten stroke team victory at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate last week after winning in a playoff…Justin Wenger, a junior at IUPUI, shot a 2-over-par to win for the win at the Dayton Fall Invitational.

Other AJGA Alumni in Women’s College Golf…
Stanford senior Kelly Husted earned top honors at the Kent Youel Invitational with a nine-stroke margin of victory…Hannah Jun, Jane Park and Tiffany Joh of UCLA went 1-2-3 last week at the Las Vegas Founders’ Collegiate Showdown. Their combined 24-under-par helped UCLA earn top honors at the tournament…Renee Skidmore’s 4-over-par tournament total and first place finish helped lift the University of Idaho to the top of the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate last week.

Leadership Links is a new program whereby the AJGA is able to further its mission to help develop young men and women by teaching charitable giving skills and service-oriented practices at an early age. This program gives juniors all the tools necessary to donate their time, talent and resources to local charities and the AJGA youth development programs.
