College Round-up


Rickie Fowler

The U.S. Collegiate Championship finished up March 26 at the Golf Club of Georgia. Trent Leon of Oklahoma State fired rounds of 69-69-70 to finish at 8-under-par 208 for the event. It was his first collegiate victory. Teammate Rickie Fowler also had a successful showing at the event, turning in a 7-under-par 209 total to finish tied for second with USC’s Jamie Lovemark. Rounding out the top five were Georgia State’s Joel Sjoholm who finished fourth, and Georgia Tech’s Cameron Tringale who finished alone in fifth.

Lovemark’s second-place finish helped the Trojans take home the team victory.

In women’s golf, Florida claimed their third victory this season at the Bryan National Collegiate March 30. Jessica Yadloczky of Florida was the top finisher with an 8-over-par 224 tournament total that placed her tied for fifth.

Stacy Lewis of Arkansas was the individual champion, claiming top honors after firing a 70-69-77 – 216 tournament total. Duke’s Amanda Blumenherst finished one shot back with a 1-over-par 217. In third was Cydney Clanton of Auburn with a 5-over-par 221.

Other AJGA Alumni in Men’s College Golf…

N.C. State’s Matt Hill carded a 9-under-par 204 tournament total during the Hootie at Bulls Bay event March 25. His victory helped propel the Wolfpack to the team victory…Houston’s Ben Moser, Kent State’s David Markle and Tulsa’s Nicolas Geyger tied for medalist honors at the National Invitational Tournament after firing matching 8-under-par 208s. TCU took home team honors led by Franklin Corpening, who finished fourth…Evansville was victorious at the Butler Spring Invitational led by Kyle Reddington, who finished at 1-over-par 145 for the win…The Oregon Duck Invitational was won by San Diego State March 25. T.J. Bordeaux of Pacific took home individual honors. Oregon’s Joey Benedetti finished second, followed in third by San Diego State’s Aaron Goldberg…Louisville was propelled to victory by Adam Rainaud who finished first at the USA Mobile Bay Intercollegiate…Michigan State’s Jack Newman took home top honors at the Western Intercollegiate with a 4-over-par 214. Michael McRae of St. Mary’s finished second and helped his team to victory…Brycen Wagner of Cal Poly defeated Cory Renfrew in a playoff to win the Cal Poly Men’s Intercollegiate. Cal Poly also took home team honors…Chattanooga was victorious at the Furman Intercollegiate March 30, after Jonathan Hodge finished first in the individual competition with a 3-under-par 213…Eastern Kentucky’s Jessie Massie finished at 3-under-par 139 during the Adidas Hoosier Invitational to take home the victory and boost his team to top honors…Michael Mulieri of Loyola College finished at even-par during the Lacrosse Homes Collegiate Invitational to earn the victory. Longwood University earned top team honors.

Other AJGA Alumni in Women’s College Golf…

Christy Carter of Oral Roberts was victorious at the UALR Women’s Golf Classic March 25, after defeating Paula Hurtado of Florida International in a playoff. Kelly Fuchik of Tulsa finished fourth and helped lead her team to victory…Kendra Little of Oregon earned a victory at home during the Oregon Duck Invitational. Her 2-under-par also led her team to top honors.

ACE

The Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant program provides financial assistance to junior golfers who wish to play in AJGA events. Its goal is to give top-flight golf opportunities to young golfers regardless of financial resources. This program helps to fulfill the AJGA’s mission of developing young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf.

What is Leadership Links?

Leadership Links is a new program whereby the AJGA is able to further its mission to help develop young men and women by teaching charitable giving skills and service-oriented practices at an early age. This program gives juniors all the tools necessary to donate their time, talent and resources to local charities and the AJGA youth development programs.
