Spaniard and PGA TOUR player to give back to junior golf

BRASELTON, Ga. — PGA TOUR professional and AJGA alumnus Sergio Garcia is the new Honorary Chairman for The Junior PLAYERS Championship presented by TaylorMade-adidas Golf, Garcia and the American Junior Golf Association announced Tuesday.

“I’m excited to serve as the Honorary Chairman of the AJGA’s Junior PLAYERS Championship,” Garcia said. “Junior golf is an important part of the future of the game. I hope we can continue to inspire and support growth of junior golf internationally.”

Garcia is an eight-time PGA TOUR champion and is currently No. 8 in the World Golf Rankings. The 2008 PLAYERS Champion supports junior golf in his home country of Spain through the Sergio Garcia Foundation, which was established in 2002.

The Sergio Garcia Foundation is focused on the social integration of disadvantaged children and young people through social assistance and extracurricular activities associated with sports; promoting, developing and funding golf clinics for disabled kids and young adults throughout Spain.

During his AJGA career, Garcia won the 1998 J&H Marsh & McLennan Apawamis Junior in Rye, New York. Garcia was the first player to ever post an under-par round in the event’s history, finishing with a final-round 3-under-par 69 and three-stroke win.

The Junior PLAYERS Championship, held at TPC Sawgrass, will celebrate its eighth year in 2014. The tournament was created to afford the world’s best junior boys the opportunity to come together and compete at a PGA TOUR venue. Notably one of the most international fields on the AJGA’s schedule, The Junior PLAYERS Championship reserves 18 of the tournament’s spots for international players.

“We are excited for Sergio to serve as the Honorary Chairman of The Junior PLAYERS Championship,” AJGA Executive Director Stephen Hamblin said. “As a former junior golfer who competed internationally and the 2008 PLAYERS Champion, Sergio is the perfect fit for this role as he embodies the international prestige of the event and is passionate about the development of golf’s next generation.”

TaylorMade-adidas Golf, the largest and most profitable golf equipment, apparel and footwear company in the world, is an official sponsor and partner of the AJGA and a loyal partner to Sergio Garcia for the last 15 years.
