Wyndham Cup earns 3.4 million impressions to win Social Media Award

It’s well known that Wyndham Cup is among the most energetic, fun and enthusiastic atmospheres in junior golf. To witness the team chants and dramatic finishes is to experience one of the most historic and memorable events the AJGA has to offer.

Only a handful of fans get to experience it first-hand, but thousands more felt the energy from the 2015 Wyndham Cup because of social media. The tournament reached the world through Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and Periscope, and for these efforts the AJGA has recognized Wyndham Cup with the Social Media Award.

“Winning the Social Media Award means we’re connecting with an audience that will someday form the core of our customer base and we’re doing it with authenticity,” said Kevin Rinker, vice president of sports & corporate partnerships for Wyndham Vacation Ownership. “If through our support of the AJGA we can connect with junior golfers and their parents and speak their language on social media, we can begin to build a relationship with them that gives us a chance to introduce them to who we are and what we do.”

Rinker was integral in driving and participating in the conversation, both during the tournament and throughout the year. His engagement on Twitter and Periscope helped enhance Wyndham Cup’s social media presence, and his year-round messaging helped #WyndhamCup make more than 3.4 million impressions on Twitter in 2015.

Though only 40 players compete in this team match play tournament, the social media conversation extended well beyond the boundaries of Old Town Club in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Friends, family, fans and former Wyndham Cup players joined the conversation, and by week’s end, 150 people tweeted nearly 500 times about #WyndhamCup.

“Great tournaments have great storytelling and sponsor activation, and social media helps Wyndham Cup achieve those goals every year,” said Andrew Greenfield, Wyndham Cup tournament director. “I’d like to thank Old Town Club for being a wonderful host, and our friends at Wyndham Worldwide and the Wyndham Championship for supporting the AJGA and Wyndham Cup year round.”

In 2014, the Wyndham Championship was recognized as the Best Social Media Activation by the PGA TOURfor its engagement, education and brand visibility during the tournament’s 75th anniversary. Also in 2014, Wyndham Cup was named the AJGA Invitational of the Year, and in 2009 the tournament earned the AJGA Charitable Giving Award.

“Wyndham Cup is something that must be experienced whether you’re an aspiring junior player, parent, college coach or sponsor,” Rinker said. “Social media is about our experiences and sharing them with others and allowing them, at least for a moment, to enter into your experience and become part of it.”

The Social Media Award will be presented at the 2016 Wyndham Cup , which will be held July 25-28 at The Stanwich Club in Greenwich, Connecticut.

Each year, the AJGA presents awards to the tournaments with the best individual hospitality, Junior-Am Fundraising Tournament, charitable giving and volunteer base. Awards are also given to the events with the highest media and social media participation. Finally, the AJGA recognizes the year’s most outstanding golf professional, superintendent and general manager, as well as the most improved event, best new event, best Junior All-Star tournament, best Invitational and overall tournament of the year.
