AJGA player, Kyle Lewis of Shawnee, Okla., died in a car accident Monday, driving home after the All-State golf tournament at Emerald Falls Golf Club in Broken Arrow, Okla.

After the tournament, Lewis had been awarded the Jim Thorpe Boys Golfer of the Year trophy by the Oklahoma Golf Coaches Association.

A 2009 HP Scholastic All-American, Lewis was valedictorian of his class at Bethel High School and had signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the University of Oklahoma in the fall.

Playing AJGA events since 2007, Lewis won the 2009 Valero Texas Open Junior Shootout presented by Pepsi and had three additional top-10 finishes.

Locally, Lewis won the Class 3A individual state golf championship in 2008 and finished runner-up for the title three other times.

"Our condolences go out to his family,” OU golf coach Ryan Hybl told the The Oklahoman . "The OU golf family will be hurting, too. Kyle was a valedictorian, a good basketball player — he was going to be a great ambassador for our university. But more than that, he was just a great young man. We will all definitely miss him.”
