Evans in Front at Under Armour® / Vicky Hurst Championship
Martin leads Girls Division at Superstition Mountain Golf & Country Club
GOLD CANYON, Ariz. — After the first round of the Under Armour® / Vicky Hurst Championship, Arizona native Neil Evans of Phoenix holds the lead in the Boys Division at 2-under-par 70. In the Girls Division, Kaira Martin of Paradise Valley, Ariz., birdied her last two holes to take the lead at 2-under-par 70.
The Under Armour® / Vicky Hurst Championship is a 36-hole stroke play event conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Superstition Mountain Golf & Country Club — Prospector Course. The tournament field boasts 51 boys and 27 girls, ages 12-18, from 18 states, Canada and Mexico. The Boys Division is playing the par-72 course at 7,066 yards and the Girls Division is playing at 6,053 yards.
Strong putting throughout the day kept Evans' score low. With only 28 putts on the round, Evans earned 3 birdies, including a long putt for birdie on No. 18.
“I was sitting on the far outside edge of the green,” Evans explained. “I made the putt from about 25 feet. I've been working really hard on my putting lately so it's nice that it's paid off.”
Four stand tied for second in the Boys Division one stroke behind Evans. At 1-under-par 71 are Cameron Palmer of Gilbert, Ariz., Jacob Knapp of Costa Mesa, Calif., Josh Lee of Orange Park, Fla., and Jordan Lee of Tarzana, Calif.
Martin came out aggressive, crediting her low round to strong iron-play. It paid off on No. 18 where she left herself a 10-foot birdie putt, which she subsequently drained.
“I stayed focused and tried to play my own game,” said Martin, who has verbaled to Virginia. “I'm hoping to keep up what I've started and win tomorrow.”
Martin has company close behind her as four girls share a tie for second place. At 1-under-par 71 are Emily Tubert of Burbank, Calif., Aurora Kan of Boothwyn, Pa., Jessica Vasilic of Anaheim Hills, Calif., and Lindsey Weaver of Scottsdale, Ariz.
