Wingo Works to 7-Under-Par for Top Spot in the Boys Division at Kingsmill Resort & Spa
Alexander takes solo lead in the Girls Division at the AJGA Junior at Kingsmill Resort & Spa
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Tyler Wingo of Fairfax, Va., fired a second round 4-under-par 67 to continue his rein of the Boys Division lead in the AJGA Junior at Kingsmill Resort & Spa. Amira Alexander of Alpharetta, Ga., carded a 2-under-par 69 to take the lead in the Girls Division by two strokes.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the AJGA Junior at Kingsmill Resort & Spa is a 54-hole stroke play event with a 36-hole cut held at the Kingsmill Resort & Spa — River Course. The field features 107 boys and 34 girls, ages 12-18, from 21 states, Canada and Italy. The Boys Division is playing the par-71 course at 6,814 yards, while the Girls Division is playing at 5,848 yards.
Wingo wasted no time continuing his great play from the first round, carding a birdie on his second hole, the par-4 No. 11. Utilizing his all-around solid golf game, Wingo sank seven birdies on the day for a two-day total 7-under-par 135.
“I've been playing very well,” Wingo said. “I have hit a lot of fairways and I have hit my approach shots close.”
Riding his strong iron play, Wingo has been a birdie machine tearing up the par-5s and short par-4s at the Kingsmill Resort & Spa — River Course. On the front nine alone, Wingo recorded four birdies, part of which included a stretch of four birdies in five holes.
“Right now my iron play is definitely my best part of my game,” Wingo said. “It has put me in position for birdies.”
In second place with a 4-under-par 138 is Sawyer Shaw of West Palm Beach, Fla. In a tie for third are Haoyuan Lu of Bradenton, Fla., and Motin Yeung of Orlando, Fla., with a 3-under-par 139. In a three-way tie for fifth place are John Jackopsic of West Hartford, Conn., Evan Russell of Essex Junction, Vt., and James Monnerville of Vero Beach, Fla., with a 2-under-par 140.
Alexander fired another great round in the Girls Division to separate herself from a three-way tie following Tuesday's first round. Holding a two-stroke lead with a 2-under-par 140, Alexander said her total game came together today.
“Everything was clicking,” Alexander said. “I hit a lot of fairways and a lot of greens.”
Keeping the ball in play wasn't the only way Alexander scored low. Her putter was red hot, helping her card four birdies on the round.
“My putting was really working today,” Alexander said. “On No. 5 I had a good shot to about 10 feet from the hole and made the putt. That putt really boosted my spirits.”
Behind Alexander in second place is Kelly Shon of Port Washington, N.Y., with an even-par 142. In third is Daniela Lendl of Vero Beach, Fla., with a 1-over-par 143.
