Garrick Fires 4-under-par 68 to Claim Lead in Boys Division at Polo Golf Junior Classic
Jutanugarn shoots even-par, holds one-shot lead at PGA National Resort & Spa
PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. — Jonathan Garrick of Atherton, Calif., jumped out to an early lead at the Polo Golf Junior Classic after firing a 4-under-par 68 in the opening round of stroke play. In the Girls Division, Moriya Jutanugarn of Bangkok, Thailand, holds a one-stroke lead moving into the second round.
The Polo Golf Junior Classic, which has been conducted annually since 1978, marks the first tournament of the American Junior Golf Association's 2011 season. The 156-player invitation-only field is made up of 78 boys and 78 girls, ages 12-18, from 26 states and 10 foreign countries. Former champions include Stewart Cink (1989), Trevor Immelman (1995), Tiger Woods (1991), Paula Creamer (2002), Grace Park (1994, 1996) and Morgan Pressel (2004).
During Monday's first round, the Boys Division played the Haig Course (6,782 yards, par 72), while the Girls Division played the Champion Course (6,252 yards, par 72). The tournament fields will be cut to the low 32 players and ties following the second round.
Garrick, a Rolex Junior All-America honorable mention, carded seven birdies on the day, five of which were on the back nine. His low round leaves him in good position heading into the final round of stroke play.
“The main goal is always to get to match play,” Garrick said. “I've been playing pretty well coming into it, so my goal is to be the No. 1 seed.”
One shot behind Garrick in a tie for second are Stewart Jolly of Birmingham, Ala., Emiliano Grillo of Bradenton, Fla., and Michael Kim of Del Mar, Calif., each with a 3-under-par 69. Tied for fifth are Michael Bernard of Huber Heights, Ohio, and JD Tomlinson of Gainesville, Fla., who each posted a 2-under-par 70.
Jutanugarn, a high school sophomore, birdied five of her first seven holes. After a 5-over-par run on Nos. 10 through 13, Jutanugarn gained one stroke back with a birdie on the par-4 16th to end the round at even par.
“Today was very windy, and my driver wasn't very good today,” Jutanugarn said. “My approach shots were good and my putting was good though.”
In a tie for second one shot behind Jutanugarn are Summar Roachell of Conway, Ark., Simin Feng of Orlando, Fla., Celine Boutier of Montrouge, France, and Grace Na of Oakland, Calif., each having posted a 1-over-par 73.
