Texeira Tops Boys Division After First Round of Winn Grips Heather Farr Classic Hosted by Longbow Golf Club
Jutanugarn Sisters Lead Girls Division at 5-under-par

MESA, Arizona — Jonah Texeira of Northridge, Calif., fired the low round of the day Friday with a 6-under-par 65 at the Winn Grips Heather Farr Classic hosted by Longbow Golf Club. Ariya and Moriya Jutanugarn of Bangkok, Thailand, each fired a 5-under-par 66 in the opening round to take a two-stroke lead in the Girls Division.

Hosted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Winn Grips Heather Farr Classic hosted by Longbow Golf Club is a 54-hole stroke play tournament. The 144-player field at the par-71 Longbow Golf Club features 96 boys and 48 girls from 14 states, Canada, and Thailand. The Boys Division is playing at 7,000 yards and the Girls Division plays at 6,150 yards.

Texeira, whose eight birdies were the most of anyone in the field, rode a hot putter to a two-stroke lead in the Boys Division. His ability to make putts from any distance allowed him to reel off a couple of birdie stretches, including three consecutive on Nos. 11, 12 and 13.

“I just made every putt today, whether it was five feet or 30 feet, I made them all,” Texeira said. “I would put it in the fairway and hit a decent approach but then just make the putt.”

He also acknowledged the significance of leading a premier tournament such as the Winn Grips Heather Farr Classic hosted by Longbow Golf Club.

“It's really an honor and it shows the hard work I've put in over the last few months is starting to pay off,” Texeira said.

Jake Knapp of Costa Mesa, Calif., finished the first round alone in second after a 4-under-par 67. Tied for third at 3-under-par 68 are Carson Jacobs of Hendersonville, Tenn., Bennett Lavin of Deerfield, Ill., and Peter Koo of Chandler, Ariz.

The Jutanugarn sisters made the top of the Girls Division a family affair, and both were happy to see each other play well. Ariya, a member of the 2014 class, posted five birdies on the back nine and acknowledged her putting as the key to her low score.

“My putting was good, but I can still improve,” Ariya said. “This tournament is very important to the Polo Golf Rankings so I'll go out tomorrow and play as well as I can.”

Moriya, a sophomore, shared a similar attitude toward her first-round score.

“Even though my approach shots were just okay I putted really well,” Moriya said. “Everybody can shoot under par here but I'll just do my best the next two days.”

Anna Kim of Chandler, Ariz., is in third at 3-under-par 68.

The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The AJGA provides valuable exposure for college golf scholarships, and has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of approximately 5,000 junior golfers from 49 states and more than 40 countries. To ensure scholarship opportunities for all junior golfers who have the skill, the AJGA created the Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant program to provide financial assistance to young players in need.

Titleist, the AJGA's National Sponsor, has been the catalyst and driving force behind the Association's success since 1989. Rolex Watch USA, which is in its third decade of AJGA support, became the inaugural AJGA Premier Partner in 2004. In 2007, after 12 years of support, Polo Ralph Lauren became the AJGA's second Premier Partner.

AJGA alumni have risen to the top of amateur, collegiate and professional golf. Former AJGA juniors have compiled more than 500 victories on the PGA and LPGA Tours. AJGA alumni include Stewart Cink, Matt Kuchar, Hunter Mahan, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Paula Creamer, Cristie Kerr, Inbee Park and Morgan Pressel.

The second round of the Winn Grips Heather Farr Classic hosted by Longbow Golf Club will tee off at Longbow Golf Club's Nos. 1 and 10 tees from 7 a.m. — 8:39 a.m., with a second wave from 11:30 a.m. — 1:09 p.m. For more information, contact tournament headquarters at (678) 617-2424.
