Bauchou outlasts Cox in record-setting playoff at the Cleveland HealthCare Foundation Junior Maymon earns first AJGA victory by three strokes at Deer Brook Golf Club
SHELBY, N.C. — Zachary Bauchou of Forest, Va., earned his first AJGA win following a record-setting eight-hole playoff at the Cleveland HealthCare Foundation Junior. Giovana Maymon of Huixquilucan, Mexico, carded a tournament total 7-under-par 209 to win at Deer Brook Golf Club.
The Cleveland HealthCare Foundation Junior was a 54-hole stroke play event conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Deer Brook Golf Club in Shelby, N.C. The tournament field included 114 boys and 29 girls, ages 12-18 from 21 states, Thailand, Mexico and Canada. The Boys Division played the par-72 course at 6,968 yards and the Girls Division played at 5,966 yards.
Bauchou finished the final round tied for the lead after firing a tournament total 8-under-par 216. His final round of 5-under-par 67 put him in position to compete in a playoff. After playing No. 18 eight times in the playoff, he was able to edge his fellow competitor by consistently making pars.
“It's very special to win since it's such a great tournament with a great field,” Bauchou said. “The first couple times around were really nerve racking and after a few times around I got in my comfort zone. It gives me a lot of confidence knowing I can play and win at the highest level.”
Chad Cox of Charlotte, N.C., ended the tournament in second place following the playoff with a tournament total 8-under-par 208. In third place was Rhyne Jones of Blowing Rock, N.C., at 7-under-par 209. Rounding out the top five were Meechai Padungsiriseth of Bradenton, Fla., Ashton Van Horne of Georgetown, Ky., Mitchell Schneider of Charlotte, N.C., and Jonathon DiIanni of Kernersville, N.C., who all posted a three-day total 6-under-par 210.
After a second-place finish at the Puerto Rico Junior Open in January, Maymon gained the experience she needed to earn her first AJGA victory in Shelby. She entered the final round with a seven-shot lead and never looked back. Maymon credits her success to consistent putting and her ability to knock down greens in regulation throughout the week.
“It means everything really,” Maymon said. “I've been hoping to win an AJGA event for a long time and I'm very happy to finally achieve my goal.”
Victoria Allred of Pfafftown, N.C., posted a 1-under-par 71 in Thursday's final round to finish the tournament at 4-under-par 212 in second place. Rounding out the top three in the Girls Division was Kailey Walsh of Boca Raton, Fla., who entered the clubhouse at 3-under-par 213 on the tournament.
The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The AJGA provides valuable exposure for college golf scholarships, and has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of approximately 5,000 junior golfers from 49 states and more than 40 countries. To ensure scholarship opportunities for all junior golfers who have the skill, the AJGA created the Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant program to provide financial assistance to young players in need.
Titleist, the AJGA's National Sponsor, has been the catalyst and driving force behind the Association's success since 1989. Rolex, which is in its third decade of AJGA support, became the inaugural AJGA Premier Partner in 2004. In 2007, after 12 years of support, Polo Ralph Lauren became the AJGA's second Premier Partner.
AJGA alumni have risen to the top of amateur, collegiate and professional golf. Former AJGA juniors have compiled more than 500 victories on the PGA and LPGA Tours. AJGA alumni include Stewart Cink, Matt Kuchar, Hunter Mahan, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Paula Creamer, Cristie Kerr, Inbee Park and Morgan Pressel.
