Davis captures second AJGA victory with one-stroke win at the Goodman Networks Junior at Traditions
Sierra Sims takes the Girls Division title at 3-under-par at the Traditions Club at Texas A&M.
BRYAN, Texas — Branson Davis of McKinney, Texas, finished with a three-round total of even-par 216 to win the Boys Division of the Goodman Networks Junior at Traditions. Sierra Sims of Austin, Texas, secured a wire-to-wire victory in the Girls Division with a three-day score of 3-under-par 213.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Goodman Networks Junior at Traditions was a 54-hole stroke play competition played on the par-72 Traditions Club at Texas A&M. The event featured 90 boys and 43 girls, ages 12-18, from 21 states and seven countries. The Boys Division played the course at 6,978 yards while the Girls Division played the course at 6,094 yards. After the second round, the Boys Division was cut to the low 45 players and ties while the Girls Division was cut to the low 22 players and ties.
After entering the final round with a 10-stroke lead, Davis struggled to a 10-over-par 82 on Sunday, but was able to hold on by a single shot for his second career AJGA victory.
“Even though I played poorly today, it was enough to get the ‘W', so I'm excited,” said Davis, who won the 2011 Under Armour®/Hunter Mahan Championship and is currently ranked No. 52 in the Polo Golf Rankings. “I've been in a bit of a slump for a couple of months so it's good to get out of it.”
Doug Ghim of Arlington Heights, Ill., shot a final-round 70 to finish in second place at 1-over-par 217. Connor Black of Houston ended up alone in third place at 3-over-par 219. There was a three-way tie for fourth place with Vincent Whaley of McKinney, Texas, Daniel De La Garza of Austin, Texas, and Wes Artac of Kingwood, Texas, all finishing at 4-over-par 220.
Sierra Sims' final round of 3-over-par 75 allowed her to collect her second career AJGA victory and was the only player in the field to finish the event under par.
“This is awesome because I haven't won in a while in the AJGA,” said Sierra Sims, whose last AJGA victory came at the 2009 Montverde Academy Junior All-Star Invitational. “It's just really nice to see all of my hard work pay off.”
Allisen Corpuz of Honolulu finished in second place at 1-over-par 217. Marijosse Navarro of San Antonio and Robynn Ree of Redondo Beach, Calif., tied for third place at 8-over-par 222.
The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The AJGA provides valuable exposure for college golf scholarships, and has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of approximately 5,500 junior golfers from 49 states and more than 40 countries. To ensure scholarship opportunities for all junior golfers who have the skill, the AJGA created the Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant program to provide financial assistance to young players in need.
Titleist, the AJGA's National Sponsor, has been the catalyst and driving force behind the Association's success since 1989. Rolex, which is in its third decade of AJGA support, became the inaugural AJGA Premier Partner in 2004. In 2007, after 12 years of support, Polo Ralph Lauren became the AJGA's second Premier Partner.
AJGA alumni have risen to the top of amateur, collegiate and professional golf. Former AJGA juniors have compiled more than 500 victories on the PGA and LPGA Tours. AJGA alumni include Stewart Cink, Matt Kuchar, Hunter Mahan, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Paula Creamer, Cristie Kerr, Inbee Park and Morgan Pressel.
