Rule 13: Ball Played as It Lies; Decision 13-2/1

During The PING Invitational at Karsten Creek, AJGA rules officials had to answer several questions concerning players taking their stance when preparing to play their shot from within the trees. Under the USGA Rules of Golf, Rule 13-2 states that a player must not improve or allow the position or lie of his ball to be improved, the area of his intended stance or swing or his line of play or a reasonable extension of that line beyond the hole by moving, bending, breaking anything growing or fixed (including immovable obstructions and objects defining out of bounds) or creating or eliminating irregularities of surface.

An exception permits a player to do so in “fairly taking his stance.” Decision 13-2/1 gives further explanation with regard to fairly taking your stance.
