Rule 19: Ball in Motion Deflected or Stopped

This month the AJGA tournament directors attended the 2006 PGA/USGA Rules of Golf Workshop in Atlanta. This is an annual event for the AJGA as the tournament directors attempt to achieve the highest level of rules certification by scoring a 92 or better on the rules exam, but more importantly the workshop gives the tournament directors a chance to prepare themselves for the long tournament season ahead.

There are going to be many golf courses to mark and many more rulings to help juniors with. For this month’s By the Book, I have decided to pose one of the tournament directors’ favorite rules questions.

What happens if a player hits a shot from the fairway and the ball, while in motion on the putting green, is deflected by a dog running across the green? How should the player proceed? Would this be any different if the player’s shot was hit from the green instead of the fairway? Click here for the answer!
