Stars Shine on Easter Weekend
Three Open tournaments highlight beginning of 2006 season

An AJGA Easter Weekend tradition continued in 2006 with the Heather Farr Classic in Mesa, Ariz., the Mizuno Junior at Chateau Elan in Braselton, Ga., and the PING Junior at The Woodlands in The Woodlands, Texas. The events featured sudden-death playoffs, holes-in-one, fun activities and stellar play from some of the best junior golf talent in the world.

Mina Harigae didn't spend much time in bunkers during her title run at the Heather Farr Classic.

The Heather Farr Classic, being played at Longbow Golf Club for the third time, featured two first-team Rolex Junior All-Americans who were able to notch their first AJGA victories. Philip Francis of nearby Scottsdale, Ariz., and Mina Harigae of Monterey, Calif., both stood at the top of the leaderboard at weeks’ end.

Francis’ wire-to-wire victory was not without some drama. After taking a four-shot lead into the final round, Francis appeared set to coast to victory. However, Roberto Galletti, Jr., of Clayton, Calif., mounted a charge, firing an 8-under-par 63 during the final round, tying for the third best 18-hole score in AJGA history. Francis thwarted any threat by recording his own 5-under-par 66, enough to claim victory by six shots.

In the Girls Division, Esther Choe, also of Scottsdale, led after the first two rounds. However, Harigae recorded a 1-under-par 70 in the final round as Choe faltered to claim a one-shot win. Kristen Schelling, playing in her hometown of Mesa, finished second after firing an impressive 68 on the final day.

At the Mizuno Junior at Chateau Elan, Florida natives Bud Cauley of Jacksonville, and Gregor Slabe of Bradenton, found themselves in a sudden-death playoff upon the conclusion of play after recording 4-over-par 217 tournament totals. After both players bogeyed the first playoff hole, Cauley drained a 25-foot birdie putt on the second hole of sudden death to notch his third career AJGA victory.

Meanwhile, Vicky Hurst of Melbourne, Fla., took charge on the back nine during the final round to grab Girls Division title. Trailing fellow competitors Kristina Wong and Brooke Pancake by two shots with six holes to play, Hurst went on to birdie Nos. 13, 15 and 17 to secure a three-shot win, the second of her AJGA career.

The PING Junior at The Woodlands featured a four-way sudden-death playoff in the Boys Division, with first-team Rolex Junior All-American Arnond Vongvanij of Bradenton, Fla., surviving to come out on top.

After taking a three-shot lead into the final round, Vongvanij faltered, bogeying the 17th and 18th holes to drop back into a four-way tie at 8-under-par for the tournament. The playoff, which included Josh Jones of The Colony, Texas, Paul Haley of Dallas, and Patrick Reed of Baton Rouge, La., lasted three holes, with Vongvanij making a two-putt par on the third hole to earn the victory.

In the Girls Division, Sydney Burlison of Salinas, Calif., coasted to a six-shot victory over Katie Conway of Wading River, N.Y. The win marked the two-time Rolex Junior All-American’s second career individual victory.
