wins U.S. Women's Amateur
Morgan
Pressel of Boca Raton, Fla., continued her incredible run by
winning the U.S. Women's Amateur, held Aug. 1-7 in Roswell,
Ga. Pressel defeated 21-year-old Maru Martinez of Venezuela
9 and 8 in the 36-hole match play finale. The victory comes
after Pressel's win at the McDonald's Betsy Rawls Girls Championship,
in which she wrapped up the "Career AJGA Slam".
Pressel's road to the championship included victories over five
current AJGA players, including Sooji Cho, Mina Harigae, Jane
Rah, Jennie Lee and Angela Park.
Final PING Junior Solheim Cup rankings released
The
2005
PING Junior Solheim Cup rankings have been finalized and
we now await the naming of the team, which is expected in the
coming weeks, once the two captain's picks are determined.
Leading the way for the USA team are Morgan Pressel of Boca
Raton, Fla., Esther Choe of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Kimberly
Donovan of Hopkinton, Mass.
Pressel earned the top spot on the strength of a remarkable
run, which included her recent victory at the McDonald's Betsy
Rawls Girls Championship. With the win, Pressel became the first
player to win the "Career AJGA Slam."
Choe established herself with two victories this season, including
the Rolex Tournament of Champions. Donovan also has a pair of
national victories this year, finishing first at the Mizuno
Junior at Chateau Elan and the Scott Robertson Memorial.
The top-10 point earners are guaranteed an invitation to play
in the team match play event, which will take place Sept. 5-7
at the Bridgewater Club in Carmel, Ind., where the USA will
look to take back the title the
Europeans claimed in 2003.
Tway and Kim capture USGA titles
Kevin Tway of Edmond, Okla., defeated Bradley Johnson
of Birmingham, Ala., 4 and 3 to win the 58th U.S. Junior Amateur
Championship held at Longmeadow Country Club in Longmeadow,
Mass., July 18-23
Tway, who recently shared the title at the Wildcat Golf/Wichita
Junior Championship, defeated stroke-play medalist and fellow
AJGA star Samuel Saunders 4 and 3 on his way to claiming the
title.
Meanwhile, In-Kyung Kim of Hilton Head Island, S.C., won the
U.S. Girls Junior Championship held at BanBury Golf Club in
Eagle, Idaho. Kim, champion of the 2005 Hargray Junior Classic,
bested In-Bee Park of Las Vegas, 5 and 4, in the championship
match.
Lovemark
wins Western Amateur
Jamie Lovemark
of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., cruised to the title at the 103rd
Western Amateur Championship, defeating Chris Wilson 3 and 2
in the finals. Lovemark, a 2004 first-team Rolex Junior All-American,
defeated Andres Gonzales, Danny Green, Luke List and Wilson
on his way to earning the title.
Lovemark became only the third player to win the Western Junior
and the Amateur.
