Kim Wins U.S. Women’s Amateur
Kimberly Kim of Pahoa, Hawaii, 14 at the
time, became the youngest woman in USGA history to claim
the U.S. Women’s
Amateur title. The event was held at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club
in North Plains, Ore., Aug. 7-13.
Kim defeated Germany’s Katharina Schallenberg
1-up in the 36-hole match play final to capture the win.
Kim is a two-time Rolex Junior All-American who won her first
AJGA tournament at age 13 at the I.R.I. Golf Group Tri-Cities
Junior at Sun Willows in 2004. Since then, Kim has finished
in the top five in five additional AJGA tournaments.
Meanwhile, Rickie Fowler of Murrieta, Calif.,
winner of the HP Boys Junior Championship in July, advanced
to the quarterfinals at the U.S. Amateur before being defeated
by eventual champion Richie Ramsay of Scotland.
AJGA Players Compete on LPGA Tour
Jane Rah of Torrance, Calif., and Sydnee
Michaels of Temecula, Calif., competed at the LPGA Tour’s
Safeway Classic presented by Pepsi Aug. 18-20 at Columbia
Edgewater Country Club in Portland, Ore.
Rah earned her way into the tournament during
Monday qualifying, where she recorded an even-par 72. She
would go on to finish at 4-over-par for two days, while Michaels
finished at 7-over-par. The cut fell at 3-over-par. |
