Ward and Myers Lead as weather Interferes with First Round at The Woodlands

Girls Division and 12 from Boys Division yet to complete round one

THE WOODLANDS, Texas—Twelve boys and the entire Girls Division failed to complete the first round after inclement weather caused the suspension of play at the TaylorMade-adidas Golf Junior at The Woodlands.  Among the players completing the first round, Texas natives Christopher Ward of McKinney and Ryan Myers of Flint lead the Boys Division with 2-under-par 70s.

The Girls Division and the remainder of the Boys Division will complete the first round with an 8 a.m. shotgun start Sunday.  The final round of the Boys Division has been shortened to nine holes with tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m. off the tenth tee.  The status of the Girls Division final round will be determined and announced following the completion of the first round Sunday.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the TaylorMade-adidas Golf Junior at The Woodlands is being contested at The Woodlands Resort & Conference Center’s Panther Trail Course.  The tournament features 156 players from 19 states and Canada, including 102 players from Texas.

Co-leader Christopher Ward, 16, described his play as consistent.  He started on the tenth tee and was 2-under par heading into No. 17, but triple bogeyed the hole to leave him at 1-over-par 37 on the back nine.

“I got off to a good start with a birdie on No. 10.  I hit a sand wedge to 25 feet and made a putt.  But I judged the distance wrong on my tee shot on No. 17 and spun it into the woods,” Ward said.

The triple bogey did not keep Ward down for long.  He sunk a 12-foot putt on the par-4 first hole for birdie.  His back-to-back birdies on Nos. 8 and 9 left him with a 3-under-par 33 on the front nine.  Ward credited his successful round mostly to his short game.

“What saved me the most was my chips.  All of my chips landed a foot or two from the hole every time, except for my 25-foot putt on No. 18 for par,” Ward said.  “My short game is pretty good, but it was better than usual today.”

The 16-year-old Myers, tied for first place with Ward, made four bogeys, but also six birdies to finish the day at 2-under par.

Tied for third and standing one stroke behind Ward and Myers at 1-under-par 71 are Stephen Cox from Jonesboro, Ark., Michael Knight of Calgary, Alberta, Ryan Spears of Del City, Okla., and Paul Haley of Dallas.

The seventeen-year-old Knight traveled to the tournament from Canada and said he considers this event to be “early in the season,” considering his club in Canada just opened for play Friday.

“I am happy with the way I was hitting today, but I am going to try to get the ball rolling better tomorrow.  I have never putted on Bermuda greens,” Knight said.
