HU STORMS TO VICTORY AT THE NIKE GOLF JUNIOR AT COLONIAL
Salvo fires a final-round 70 to capture the Girls Division crown
JACKSON, Miss. – Mu Hu of Shen Zhen, China, shot a bogey-free final-round 68 to win the Nike Golf Junior at Colonial presented by the Mississippi Farm Bureau. Hu’s tournament-total of 3-under-par 213 put him five shots ahead of Hunter Hamrick of Montgomery, Ala., who had a final-round 69.
Second-round leader Lion Kim of Lake Mary, Fla., finished with a tournament-total of 3-over-par 219, along with Kyle Cothran of Soddy Daisy, Tenn., and Will Ovenden of Columbia, S.C.
Sarah Salvo of Glendale, Calif., playing in her first AJGA tournament, was the only player to break par in the girls division. She fired a final-round 70 for a tournament-total of 4-over-par 220, defeating Sakurako Mori of Ibaraki, Japan, by two strokes.
The Nike Golf Junior at Colonial presented by the Mississippi Farm Bureau was a 54-hole stroke play event conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Colonial Country Club, Jackson Course. The tournament featured 84 of the nation’s premier junior golfers, ages 12-15, from 17 states, Japan and China.
“I wanted to shoot bogey-free,” said the 15-year-old Hu, who had one win and two second-place finishes in AJGA tournaments in 2003. “I had a good feeling coming into this week.”
That confidence came despite not having played well leading up to the tournament. Things only got better as the week wore on, though, as Hu followed an opening-round 75 with a second-round 70.
“I wasn’t playing good and I was a little angry the first day,” said Hu, who trailed Kim by two shots entering the final round. “The last two days I calmed down and played better.”
Salvo, who turns 14 years old on June 9, entered the final round tied with Mori, who struck first with a birdie at No. 2. But Salvo responded by making four birdies in her next six holes to make the turn at 3-under-par.
“I was nervous,” Salvo said. “If you’re not nervous, it’s not normal.”
After a birdie at No. 10 put her at 4-under-par for the round, a double-bogey at No. 11 allowed Mori to close to within one. The duo battled across the back nine, but it wasn’t until Salvo rolled in a 12-foot birdie putt on No. 18 that she could finally breathe easy.
“I was just trying to forget about each hole,” Salvo said, “and not try to protect my score. I guess it worked.”
