THE ONLY PLAYER AT EVEN PAR, ALMINAS TAKES ONE-STROKE LEAD AT APAWAMIS

Smith breaks tie and takes control of Girls Division

RYE, N.Y. – Pete Alminas of East Longmeadow, Mass., shaved seven strokes from his opening round score and fired a 3-under-par 69 to take over the lead in the Boys Division at the Marsh Junior at Apawamis.

Holding steady, Nicole Smith of Riverside, Calif., separated herself from the Girls Division field with a comfortable six-shot lead entering the final round.

The Marsh Junior at Apawamis is a 54-hole tournament conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at The Apawamis Club Rye, N.Y. The tournament features 99 of the nation’s premier junior golfers, ages 12-18, from 13 states, including 34 from New York.

After high first round scores, The Apawamis Club proved to be a challenging course to break par once again. But without a single bogey all round, Alminas was able to make his charge to the top of the leader-board.

“I’m playing pretty consistent right now,” Alminas said.  “I didn’t have any bogeys and made some big par putts.

“With this course, I hit a lot of 3-woods and leave myself with wedge shots in."

In only his fourth AJGA tournament, Alminas still said he feels comfortable with the position he’s in.

“I was in one of the final groups in Virginia (at the ClubCorp Junior Players Championship) last year and played pretty well,” said Alminas, who finished sixth in that event. “The experience (of being in contention) should help me.”

As the only junior to stand at even par for the tournament, Alminas holds a one shot lead over Peter Uihlein of North Dartmouth, Mass., and Conrad Von Borsig of Swarthmore, Pa.  Christopher Gold of Haddonfield, N.J., also fired a 3-under-par 69 to catapult himself into fourth place, while Kevin Horan of Marina Del Rey, Calif., is four shots back in fifth place.

Riverside, Calif.-native Nicole Smith entered the second round tied for the lead with Courtney Tincher of Greenwich, Conn., but separated herself by shooting a second round 5-over-par 77.

“I’m not too happy with the round today, but I know I can come out and shoot a wicked score on this course,” Smith said.  “I can reach the par-5s (in two) and am going to come out and play well tomorrow.”

Tincher is in second and Kasi Lee of Paramus, N.J., is in third. She trails the leader by seven strokes.
