AJGA ST. REGIS ASPEN JUNIOR CLASSIC
Aspen Golf Club
Aspen, Colo.
June 4-7, 2001

ASPEN, Colo. -- Jake Hermes of Durango, Colo., carded a 4-under-par 68 Tuesday to take the Boys Division first-round lead at the AJGA St. Regis Aspen Junior Classic. Courtney Jones of Lake Quivira, Kan., and Paula Creamer of Pleasanton, Calif., both finished with rounds of 76 to share the lead in the Girls Division

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the 13th annual 54-hole event at Aspen Golf Club includes a field of 105 boys and girls (ages 13-18) representing 24 states and three countries. Past champions include LPGA professionals Emilee Klein, Kelli Kuehne and Heather Bowie, as well as former U.S. Amateur champion Hank Kuehne.

Hermes' round of 34-34-68 was the only score of the day to break par. He holds a five-shot lead entering Wednesday's second round.

"I made a lot of putts when I needed to and my irons were sharp," said Hermes. "That's what you have to do if you plan on shooting a low score."

The 7,027-yard Aspen Golf Club, with its length, large greens and gusty weather played difficult for many, but the conditions seemed to suit Hermes well.

"I like the course," said Hermes. "The greens are difficult and hard, but I like the set-up of the course."

After a bogey on No. 11, Hermes birdied three of the last seven holes to finish out a solid opening round.

Joining Hermes in the top five were Duncan Street of Bonita, Calif., and Nathan Lashley of Scottsbluff, Neb., at 73, and Braxton Hunter of Rockford, Tenn., and Thomas
Oh of Englewood, Calif., at 74. Defending champion Ashdon Woods of Lander, Wyo., ended with an 81.

Creamer's round of 40-36-76 earned her Girls Division co-leader status despite being somewhat disappointed in her play.

"I hit my driver and irons pretty well, but I really struggled with my short game," said Creamer.

Jones attributed her 76 to consistent and smart play.

"I just tried to make sure that I two-putted greens," said Jones. "You really have to think on this course, you can't just go firing for the pins. You have to know where to miss your shots, because you're penalized for hitting poor shots."

Jennifer Karr of Scottsdale, Ariz., sits in third after an opening round 77.

Second-round action begins Wednesday morning, with tee times running from 7:30 a.m.-12:36 p.m.
