MARSH JUNIOR AT BETHPAGE STATE PARK Bethpage State Park, Red Course
Farmingdale, New York
August 6-9, 2001
PEFFLEY LEADS FIELD WITH OPENING-ROUND 66 AT BETHPAGE Rhode Islander Grzebien in first in Girls Division
at even-par
FARMINGDALE, N.Y.-Blaine Peffley
of Lebanon, Pa., posted a bogey-free round of 4-under-par
66 Tuesday to seize the first-round lead in the Boys
Division at the AJGA Marsh Junior at Bethpage State
Park. In the Girls Division, Anna Grzebien of Saunderstown,
R.I., sits in first with an opening-round 70.
The AJGA Marsh Junior at Bethpage State
Park, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association,
features a field of 99 players representing 19 states
and Canada. Twenty-eight juniors from the state of New
York are competing this week. Past champions of the
AJGA's annual Metropolitan New York event include Sergio
Garcia, Grace Park and Brittany Straza.
"What I wanted to do was go out and shoot 18 pars,
then make tomorrow the moving day," the 16-year-old
Peffley said. "But fortunately, things went a little
differently."
Fresh off a victory last week at the AJGA ClubCorp
Junior Players Championship, Peffley hit 17 greens in
regulation en route to his 34-32--66.
Peffley is seeking his third-career AJGA title this
week at Bethpage State Park. The Pennsylvania native
won his first AJGA championship in 1998 at the Compaq
Junior All-Star Classic at Mission Hills.
"I'm going to go out tomorrow with the mindset
that I had today-to make 18 pars," he said. "And
maybe a couple of putts will fall."
Chris McLaughlin sits in second after carding a 3-under-par
67. Last month, the 17-year-old from Northport, N.Y.,
finished 18th at the AJGA Indiana Junior Classic. McLaughlin
sank five birdies on the back nine, shooting a 4-under-par
31 on the final nine holes.
"I'm happy with my score," McLaughlin said.
"I'll take a 67 any day."
Greg Pieczynski of Kingston, Pa., John Browndorf of
Rumson, N.J., and Jordan Hasbrouck of Spring, Texas,
are tied for third after opening rounds of 1-under-par
69.
In the Girls Division, Grzebien credited consistent
play for her success Tuesday. The 16-year-old Rhode
Islander made only one bogey and hit 15 greens in regulation
to card a round of even-par 70.
"I just stayed pretty consistent out there today,"
she said. "If you keep your drive in the fairway,
you'll get a good shot at the green. And that's what
I did today."
Tied for second place are Theresa Paik of Silver Springs,
Md., and Clare Lucey of Winnetka, Ill., with opening
rounds of 5-over-par 75.
Second-round action takes place Wednesday on Bethpage
State Park's Red Course with tee times beginning at
7 a.m. For more information on the AJGA Marsh Junior
