AJGA MARSH JUNIOR AT BETHPAGE
STATE PARK
Bethpage State Park, Red Course
Farmingdale, New York
August 6-9, 2001
PEFFLEY MAKES IT BACK-TO-BACK TITLES
WITH WIN AT BETHPAGE
Youngest Grzebien sister wins first career championship
FARMINGDALE, N.Y.-Blaine Peffley
of Lebanon, Pa., earned his second AJGA tournament title
in as many weeks Thursday after completing play at the
AJGA Marsh Junior at Bethpage State Park with a three-day
total of 6-under-par 204. In the Girls Division, Anna
Grzebien of Saunderstown, R.I., became the third member
of her family to win the event in the last three years
by finishing first with a tournament total of 1-under-par
209.
Peffley and Grzebien, who both led the 54-hole tournament
wire-to-wire, join Sergio Garcia, Grace Park and Brittany
Straza as champions of the American Junior Golf Association's
12th annual metropolitan New York event. The AJGA Marsh
Junior at Bethpage State Park featured a field of 99
players representing 19 states and Canada, including
28 juniors from the state of New York.
"I'm just amazed, I never thought I could do this-win
an AJGA tournament, let alone two," Peffley said
shortly after his 5-stroke victory. "After winning
last week, it made me relax a little bit. This week,
I had fun and really made the week special."
The 16-year-old Pennsylvanian began the
week by posting a 4-under-par 66 that staked him to
a lead he did not relinquish for the remainder of the
tournament. Peffley punctuated his victory with a final
round 2-under-par 68, which included four birdies. He
credited his successful putting as the key to capturing
his second consecutive title.
"I'm finally learning how to putt
well and how to make the putts that count," he
said.
He withstood a late charge from Greg Pieczynski, who
finished tied for second with David Yoon of Irvine,
Calif., at 1-under-par 209. Pieczynski of Kingston,
Pa., won the Nabisco Oreo Cookie Low Final Round Award
with a 3-under 67. He nearly made a double-eagle in
Thursday's final round, hitting the flagstick on the
535 yard, par-5 16th hole with his second shot from
243 yards.
Brian Fitzpatrick of Harrison, N.Y., took fourth place
at 2-over-par 212. Hoyt McGarity of Sagaponack, N.Y.,
John Michael Pelet of Atglen, Pa., Billy Stewart of
Devon, Pa., and Matt McLean of Miami, Fla., tied for
fifth at 3-over-par 213.
On the girls side, Grzebien joined sisters Lauren and
Mary Ellen as champions of the AJGA's annual New York
event. This year's winner, Anna, denied any sibling
rivalry.
"I try to play my own game and see how I'm improving,"
Anna said. "I try not to pay attention to how I
compare to them. I like to see how far I've come over
the years."
Holding a 4-stroke lead entering Thursday's final round,
Grzebien extended the margin over second-place finisher
Theresa Paik to 10 shots. Paik, from Silver Springs,
Md., wrapped up action with a third-round 75, finishing
at 9-over-par for the tournament.
Grzebien capped her dominant week by also taking home
the Nabisco Oreo Cookie Low Final Round Award after
carding a final-round 69 that included four birdies
and just one bogey. The 16-year-old sealed the win with
an impressive performance down the stretch, shooting
2-under-par 33 on the final nine holes. She narrowly
missed a birdie on the 18th hole, hitting the flagstick
from 18 feet as she chipped on to the green.
"At first, I was playing too safe," she said.
"On the back, I got more aggressive. I didn't really
think about how far ahead I was. I just tried to go
as low as I could."
The AJGA Marsh Junior at Bethpage State Park marks
the first-ever AJGA title for the youngest Grzebien
sister.
"It feels nice," the Rhode Islander said.
"Especially because I was so close at (the AJGA
Sand Barrens Junior Championship), but now I've finally
got one."
Jenny Suh of Fairfax, Va., finished behind Grzebien
and Paik in third with a three-day total of 13-over-par
223.
