RIM RISES FROM SEVEN-STROKES DOWN
TO CLAIM AJGA BUICK JUNIOR OPEN
Creamer grabs fourth national title of the year in
the Girls Division
HARBOR SPRINGS, Mich. - Mike Rim of Lakewood,
Calif., outlasted Colby Beckstrom of North Muskegon,
Mich., through a one-hole sudden-death playoff to claim
the 17th annual AJGA Buick Junior Open. Paula Creamer
of Pleasanton, Calif., held off Lisa Tyler of Lighthouse
Point, Fla., for a two-stroke victory in the Girls Division.
The 54-hole event, conducted by the American Junior
Golf Association at the Boyne Highlands Resort, par-72
Moor Course, featured 99 players from 19 states and
included 33 Michigan natives. Past winners include Phil
Mickelson and Mt. Pleasant, Mich., native Kelly Robbins.
Rim fired a low-tournament round of 6-under-par 66
to jump atop the leaderboard. The 17-year-old carded
five birdies, including three consecutive on Nos. 8,
9 and 10. Rim's round was highlighted with an eagle
on the 533-yard, par-5 14th hole. The 17-foot eagle
putt gave Rim a share of the lead.
"I just kept playing the course after that,"
Rim said. "I knew if I could par out, I would have
a chance."
Beckstrom started off hot with four birdies in the
first eight holes to move up the leaderboard. The 2000
runner-up clung to a share of the lead until a late
bogey on the 17th hole. Needing a eagle to win and a
birdie to tie with Rim, who was in the clubhouse at
215. Beckstrom landed his second shot 5-iron from 190
yards out to within 20-feet on the par-5 18th hole.
His eagle putt slid left for a tap-in birdie to force
a sudden-death playoff.
"I thought my eagle putt would straighten-up about
three feet from the hole," Beckstrom said. "It
had the right speed and was right at the target but
it broke left."
Rim and Beckstrom headed to the 399-yard, par-4 10th
hole for the sudden-death playoff. Both second shots
missed the green with Beckstrom forced to chip from
the front-side hazard. His third shot fell short of
the green and Rim's chip trickled six feet past the
hole. Needing a chip-in to save par, Beckstrom went
for the flagstick and nearly holed his fourth shot but
missed right. Rim saved his par and claimed his first
AJGA title.
"I'm thrilled with the victory," said Rim,
who finished at 70-79-66--215. "Top-3 was my goal
so I definitely exceeded my expectations."
Beckstrom carded a 72-73-70--215 for his second consecutive
runner-up finish at this tournament. David Huestis of
Worthington, Ohio, claimed third place at 217. Jesse
Dixon of Ann Arbor, Mich., finished four strokes back
at 219. Jim Roney of Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich., and
Ryder Frerichs of Edina, Minn., rounded out the top-5
at 220.
Creamer held off a late charge by honorable mention
Polo Golf Junior All-American Tyler. The pair headed
down the 502-yard, par-5 18th hole with Creamer clinging
to a one-stroke lead. Both stuck their third shots within
10 feet of the hole, with Tyler needing a birdie for
a possible playoff. Her putt went left and Creamer needed
only a two-putt to win but rolled in the birdie to claim
her fourth national title this year.
"After Lisa birdied the 17th hole, it gave her
a lot of confidence but it also picked me up,"
Creamer said. "It was definitely a battle going
down 18."
Creamer hit 17 of 18 greens and missed only three fairways.
The 15-year-old recovered nicely from a front-side 42
in the second round with a 1-under-par 35.
"I'm pleased with how this year has went,"
Creamer said. "I hope I can carry this momentum
into next year."
Beth Marushak of Northampton, Pa., finished four strokes
back at 226.
