ALMOND STORMS BACK TO WIN CHRYSLER JUNIOR CLASSIC
Fires second 5-under-par 67 to secure first AJGA win; Bley takes title in Girls Division

HORSESHOE BAY, Texas-Jarrett Almond of Austin, Texas, fired a 5-under-par 67 to come from five strokes down to win the AJGA Chrysler Junior Classic. Jennifer Bley of Ft. Worth, Texas, carded a 2-over-par 74 to grab the Girls Division title.

The 54-hole event, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, was held at the Horseshoe Bay Resort's Slick Rock Course. The field featured 99 players representing 14 states, including 85 players from Texas.

Almond carded rounds of 67-73-67--207 to finish at 9-under-par for the tournament. Second-round leader Jason Lindgren of Midland, Texas, finished one stroke back at 8-under-par 208 along with Brian Fitzpatrick of Harrison, N.Y., and Zachary Reeves of Arlington, Texas.

Almond started making his move with a birdie on No. 3, and followed it up with an eagle on the 503-yard, par-5 fifth hole after he hit his 4-iron from 200 yards to within 10-feet of the hole for his third eagle of the tournament. Almond finished the front side with a 3-under-par 33.

"Making the turn, I knew I was probably still behind," Almond said. "I wanted to get more birdies on the back especially on the par 5s."

Almond grabbed birdies on the par-5 10th and 12th holes, and his birdie on No. 15 had the 18-year-old at 10-under-par and gave him a two-stroke lead. A three-putt bogey on the 17th hole cut his lead to one, but Almond completed his stellar round by getting up-and-down for par on the 420-yard, par-4 18th .

"I feel surprised how well I played this week," said Almond, who will golf for Saint Mary's University in the fall. "I know I can now compete with confidence, especially finishing strong down the stretch."

Lindgren battled his swing through the first 12 holes, but regained his composure to finish strong on the last six holes. His birdie putt from against the fringe on No. 18 stopped at the lip of the cup, and prevented the North Texas signee from playing in a two-man sudden-death playoff.

"I started hitting more putts down the stretch, but I couldn't get enough putter on the birdie putt on No. 18," Lindgren said. "I had a great tournament, but someone else just played better at the end."

Fitzpatick and Reeves both played the back nine at 3-under-par 33 to finish strong at 5-under-par 67 for runner-up finishes. Drew Hackler of Tulsa, Okla., wrapped up fifth place at 209, after carding a 4-under-par 68.

Jennifer Bley followed up her second place finish from a year ago, with a 1-over-par 73 to secure her first AJGA title. The Brown University signee nailed down 15 pars, and one birdie, to finish at 7-over-par 223.

"I didn't do anything spectacular," Bley said. "I just tried to stay consistent and make par."

Camille Blackerby of Breckenridge, Texas, finished two strokes back at 225. Brooke Shelton of Dallas, and Caney Hines of San Antonio, tied for third at 10-over-par 226.
