AJGA
PRESEASON JUNIOR AT DIABLO GRANDE
Diablo Grande, The Legends West Course
Patterson, Calif.
March 9-11, 2001
THREE-WAY
DEADLOCK ATOP DIABLO GRANDE LEADERBOARD
Levin, Park and Qualle earn three AJGA exemptions
for 2001 season
PATTERSON,
Calif. - Three Californians shot even-par 144s over
36 holes on The Legends West Course to share the title
at the inaugural AJGA Preseason Junior at Diablo Grande.
Spencer Levin of Elk Grove; Lenny Park of Rowland Heights
and Ryan Qualle of Turlock each earned three exemptions
into AJGA events this summer for their first-place performances.
The 36-hole
event, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association
on Saturday and Sunday, featured 84 boys ages 13-18
from 14 states. The tournament, the second of three
AJGA preseason events, was conducted solely for AJGA
members who did not compete in an AJGA tournament in
2000.
Levin, 16,
earned his share of the tournament title with rounds
of 75-69--144. He took advantage of the par-5s, playing
them at 3-under in Sunday's final round.
"I
hit the ball really well today and switched putters
--- which definitely helped," Levin said. "I
didn't think I'd tie for the lead, but I knew I'd be
right up there."
Park, 16,
also coupled a sub-par final round (70) with an over
par opening round (74). He made three birdies and recorded
just one bogey on his final round to earn his spot atop
the leaderboard.
"Today
I tried to concentrate my best on every shot,"
said Park. "My middle range putting was also very
good."
Playing
in the final group on a familiar course, Qualle, 17,
birdied three of the last four holes Sunday for a 73-71--144.
Qualle, who lives just half an hour from Diablo Grande,
has played in several tournaments on the Legends West
Course in the past.
"I've
shot 71 here in a junior tournament before, so I knew
I could do well," Qualle said. "Today I hit
more fairways and made the important putts down the
stretch."
First-round
leader Seann Harlingten of Scottsdale, Ariz., finished
fourth at 71-74--145. Rounding out the top five was
Bobby Nyberg of El Dorado Hills, Calif., with a 74-73--147.
Harlingten and Nyberg each earned two exemptions for
their top-five finish, while the top-15 finishers each
earned one exemption for the coming summer.
