JOHNSON BESTS CHA IN SUDDEN-DEATH
PLAYOFF TO CLAIM BOYS DIVISION TITLE AT EAGLE RIDGE
Athas wins Girls Division with 11-over-par tournament
total
GALENA, Ill. - Dana Johnson of
Brantford, Ontario, outlasted Tim Cha of Chino Hills,
Calif., in a sudden-death playoff Thursday to take the
Boys Division championship at the AJGA Compaq Junior
All-Star Classic at Eagle Ridge. Christi Athas of Eldora,
Iowa, claimed the title in the Girls Division with a
two-day total of 11-over-par 155.
The Compaq Junior All-Star Classic at
Eagle Ridge, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association,
featured a field of 83 players representing 23 states
and Canada. Thirty Illinois natives competed in their
homestate this week. The Compaq/David Leadbetter Junior
All-Star Series was created in 1998 to give younger
AJGA members more opportunities to play at the national
level.
"I started the round off horribly," Johnson
said of his final-round 74. "But I worked my way
back into it on the back nine. I played my heart out."
Johnson (69-74--143) held a one-stroke lead heading
to the par-4, 385-yard 18th hole, but was pushed into
a playoff after eventual runner-up Tim Cha (71-72--143)
birdied the final hole of regulation.
The 15-year-old Johnson defeated Southern California
native Cha on the first playoff hole, the par-4 9th,
to claim the title.
"I've learned I can compete at this level,"
the Canada-native said.
Clark Klaasen of Ada, Mich., took third after carding
a final-round 70 to complete the tournament at even-par
144. Ben Herrera of Waukee, Iowa, and Michael Schachner
of Libertyville, Ill., shared fourth at two-over-par
146.
In the Girls Division, Christi Athas took home her
first-career AJGA championship after using consistent
iron-play throughout the final round. She hit 14 greens
in regulation during Thursday's final round, bringing
her total number of greens in regulation to 28 in the
two-round event.
"It was a boring round today," Athas said
of her final-round 78. "But that's okay. I just
played solid and stayed focused on my game."
The AJGA Compaq Junior All-Star Classic at Eagle Ridge
marked Athas' third career AJGA appearance.
Taking second was Jennifer Hong of Windermere, Fla.,
who wrapped up play at 14-over-par 158 after carding
a final round of 77 Thursday. Brittany Lambert of Keokuk,
Iowa, and Katie Trachok of Upper Saint Clair, Pa., finished
tied for third at 17-over-par 161.
