GOFORTH'S HOT PLAY LEADS HENRY-GRIFFITTS JUNIOR AT FURMAN
Francis posts second straight 71 for three-shot lead

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Ben Goforth's strong play continued in the second round of the Henry-Griffitts Junior at Furman as he posted a 4-under-par 68 to grab a one-shot lead at 7-under-par 137. Abbi Francis leads the Girls Division with a 2-under-par 142. Francis carded nines of 36-35 for a 1-under 71.

The Henry-Griffitts Junior at Furman, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at the Furman University Golf Club, includes 81 boys and 21 girls, ages 13-18, representing 15 states, Puerto Rico and Canada.

Goforth, who qualified on Sunday in a sudden-death playoff, carded nines of 34-34. He played steadily all day, posting four birdies and no bogeys.

"I hit my irons well and I didn't miss many shots," said Goforth. "I'm hitting a lot of crucial putts. I'm keeping the ball in the fairway and avoiding the trees. You have to do that to score well on this course."

Goforth, 16, and a native of Shelby, N.C., placed second in the Class 2A State Tournament a few weeks ago.

"I just need to stay focused. I'm going to wake up feeling good, and come out and try to have fun," Goforth added.

Chasing Goforth is Nick Biershank of Boiling Springs, S.C. The 18-year-old shot his second consecutive 3-under 69 and is one shot back at 6-under-par 138.

Greenville native Brian Duncan and Luke List of Ringgold, Ga., are two shots back at 5-under 139. J.C. Deacon of Unionville, Ontario, and Matt Every of Daytona Beach, Fla., are at 1-under 143.

In the Girls Division, Abbi Francis of Conyers, Ga., posted her second straight 1-under 71 for a three-shot lead in the girls race.

"I felt that my putting was a little better today. I'm hitting the ball better, especially my driver," Francis said.

"For tomorrow, I need to play my game and hit my driver straight. I am happy with the way I'm playing, and I am going to go out and enjoy it," Francis said.

Three shots back is Julieta Granada of Bradenton, Fla., who shot a 1-under 71 for a two-day total of 1-over 145. Granada was the girls' sole qualifier on Sunday. Amy Middleton of Citronelle, Ala., is third at five-over-par 149.

The final round will conclude on Thursday with tee times starting at 7 a.m. For more information, contact Chris Forman at (864) 294-6283.
