SCHACHNER AND WISSMUELLER SHARE MEDALIST
HONORS AT AJGA QUALIFIER
Uphaus finishes first in Girls Division
GURNEE, Ill. - Michael Schachner of Libertyville,
Ill., and Brad Wissmueller of Wausau, Wisc., carded
rounds of 4-over-par 76 Monday to share medalist honors
at the AJGA Golfweek Chicago Junior Qualifier at Bittersweet
Golf Club. Amber Uphaus of Wauseon, Ohio, finished first
in the Girls Division with an 11-over-par 83.
The top-seven boys and top-two girls finishers in Monday's
qualifier earned the opportunity to participate in the
AJGA Golfweek Chicago Junior, which begins Wednesday
at Winnetka Golf Club. Monday's qualifier, conducted
by the American Junior Golf Association, featured 83
boys and 12 girls representing 15 states and Canada.
Schachner, 15, survived difficult conditions in advancing
to the AJGA Golfweek Chicago Junior.
"(The course) was tough," Schachner commented.
"The greens were pretty fast, as were the fairways.
The wind made it even tougher."
Sharing medalist honors with Schachner was the 16-year-old
Wissmueller, who competed in his first AJGA event.
"I was really pleased," Wissmeuller said
of his performance. "I knew that I would have to
shoot pretty well because there was a good field here
today. This is a tough course, there are lots of places
to get in trouble."
Thom Irvin of Grayslake, Ill., Paul Jabour of Clive,
Iowa, and Gregory Takata of Palatine, Ill., each shot
5-over-par 77 to earn spots in the tournament field.
Trent Twaddle of Maryville, Mo., and Ryan Davis of Overland
Park, Kan., also qualified after outlasting two other
golfers in a sudden-death playoff. Twaddle and Davis
fired rounds of 6-over-par 78.
Uphaus, 16, led the way in the Girls Division. She
used seven pars and one birdie to shoot an 83 and finish
three strokes ahead of Katie Strawser, who also qualified
after finishing second. Strawser, of Flushing, Mich.,
finished 14 strokes over par after shooting an 86.
"My thoughts before the round were to stay out
of trouble and place the ball where I wanted to,"
Uphaus said.
Her highest career finish in an AJGA tournament is
eighth place in a Compaq Junior All-Star Series event.
"I'm excited to play in the tournament,"
Uphaus said. "I just want to play smart and avoid
trouble."
Action at the AJGA Golfweek Chicago Junior begins Wednesday,
June 13, with tee times running from 7:00 a.m. to 12
p.m. at Winnetka Golf Club. For more information on
