AJGA PRESEASON JUNIOR AT JEKYLL ISLAND
Jekyll Island Resort, Oleander Course
Jekyll Island, Ga.
February 23-25, 2001

SUNG BACK CAPTURES PRESEASON JUNIOR CROWN AT JEKYLL ISLAND
Top Fifteen Finishers Earn Exemptions into AJGA Events

Jekyll Island, Ga. -- Sung Back of Rossville, Ga., carded a final-round 2-under-par 70 to capture his first national victory at the AJGA Preseason Junior at Jekyll Island.

The 36-hole stroke play tournament, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, was held on the par-72 Oleander Course at Jekyll Island Resort.

Back, a 17-year-old sophomore at Lakeview High School, started the final round one shot back of first-round leader Tommy Suri of Miami. After a 2-under 34 on the front nine Back took a one-shot lead and a birdie on the par 5, 11th hole sealed the victory.

"I think my key to victory was getting off to a great start today and putting pressure on Tommy," Back said. "I got my putter working early and hit a lot of key putts."

Back, who's only AJGA experience was the 2000 Taylor Made-adidas Golf Qualifier at Chateau Elan, recorded nine birdies in 36 holes en route to a 5-under-par 139 total.

"I came in this week hoping for a top-5 finish," Back said. "The victory is a big surprise and it gives me a lot confidence for my future at the national level," Back said.

Suri made a late run picking up two birdies in the final four holes to finish with an even- par 72 and 4-under-par 140 total.

Colin Floyd of Loris, S.C., joined Back and Suri as the only players to finish the event below par, garnering third place at 2-under 142. Fourteen-year-old Brian Harman of Savannah, Ga., finished fourth at 144 and Drake Bailey closed out the top five at 148.

The Jekyll Island event is the first of three Preseason Junior Series events conducted by the AJGA in 2001. The tournaments are aimed specifically at players who have tried, but have been unsuccessful in gaining entry into an AJGA tournament in the past. The AJGA has developed this series as an avenue for more members to earn playing opportunities at the national level and gain exposure for college golf scholarships.

By winning this event Back will be automatically accepted into three AJGA events, the top five finishers and ties will be accepted into two AJGA events, while the top 15 finishers and ties will be accepted into one AJGA tournament.
