ROSENFELD AND BELL MAKE THEIR MOVE IN DALLAS
Code sisters maintain their lead in the Girls Division

DALLAS - Texans Matthew Rosenfeld and Jeff Bell, both of Plano, made their way to the top of the leaderboard in the Boys Division at the second round of the fourth annual AJGA Justin Leonard/Deloitte & Touche Junior Team Championship. The sister duo of Mallory and Whitney Code of Tampa, Fla., maintained their lead in the Girls Division.

The 54-hole event, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, features 88 players representing 16 states and Mexico, including 12 Polo Golf Junior All-Americans. PGA Tour star Justin Leonard, a five-time AJGA All-American (1986-90) during his junior career, serves as honorary tournament chairman of the event. A Team Modified Stableford Scoring system is used with points awarded as follows: double-eagle +8, eagle +5, birdie +2, par 0, bogey -1, and double-bogey or worse -3.

Having played together since the age of four, Rosenfeld and Bell made an aggressive attack of the Northwood Club by netting a +13 for the round, leaving them with a +14 score for the tournament. The turning point came on the 491-yard, par-5 14th hole. Bell faded his second shot around the greenside bunkers to within six feet of the flagstick. The third-team Polo Junior Golf All-American connected on his eagle opportunity to give his team a huge momentum lift.

"That was big for our momentum," said Rosenfeld, the reigning Polo Golf Junior Player of the Year. "It's important to go at least +4 on No. 14 for the tournament to give us a chance to aggressively go after birdies on other holes."

"We're not looking for pars this tournament," Bell said. "We're looking for a win."

Fellow Plano residents Drew Pigg and Derek Abel are also hovering around the top of the leaderboard. Pigg and teammate Trent Leon of Dallas sit two points back at +12 along with Abel and Chris Wheeler of Allen, Texas. T.J. Blanford of Paradise Valley, Ariz., and Ben Hayes of Scottsdale, Ariz., sit in fourth place at +11.

Thomas Jordan and Pat Patterson, both of Sea Island, Ga., recovered nicely from a frustrating -17 first-round score to card the top round of the day at +15. They sit in 12th place overall.

Mallory and Whitney Code maintained their first-round lead with matching scores of 0 for the day to remain at -3. The Codes went on a birdie binge on Nos. 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. A backside cool down prevented them from expanding their tournament lead going into the final round.

"We need to keep getting a lot of birdies tomorrow," said Whitney, who will attend the University of Florida in the fall. "Our goal is to play consistent and stay away from any double bogeys."

Brittany Lang of McKinney, Texas, and Ashley Knoll of The Woodlands, Texas, moved into second at -10. Paula Creamer of Pleasanton, Calif., and Taylor Leon of Dallas are in third at -18.

Final-round action will begin at 9 a.m. on Thursday. For more information on the AJGA Justin Leonard/Deloitte & Touche Junior Team Championship, or other AJGA events, contact the tournament headquarters at (972) 239-1366 ext. 174.
