AJGA KROGER JUNIOR INVITATIONAL
Pepsi Qualifier Series presented by ClubCorp
Elks Run Golf Club
Batavia, Ohio
August 5, 2001

AMIS LIGHTS UP ELKS RUN TO TAKE MEDALIST HONORS IN BOYS DIVISION
Costello takes medalist honors in Girls Division with 78

BATAVIA, Ohio-Matt Amis of Terrace Park, Ohio, fired a 2-under-par 69 Sunday to take medalist honors in the Boys Division qualifier for the AJGA Kroger Junior Invitational at Elks Run Golf Club. Meghan Costello of Copley, Ohio, carded a 78 to take medalist honors in the Girls Division qualifier.

The 18-hole Pepsi qualifier, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, included 92 players. The top 14 boys and top two girls gained entry into the AJGA Kroger Junior Invitational to be held Tuesday through Thursday at Elks Run Golf Club.

The Harvard-bound Amis used consistent shotmaking and some solid putting to shoot the best score of the day.

"I wanted to go out and shoot 75 or better," the 18-year-old Amis said. "My goal was to just keep the ball in play. I got into a groove once I figured out the greens and just stayed relaxed all day."

Amis drained a 15-foot birdie putt on No. 11 and a 20-foot birdie putt on No. 12 to boost his round. He finished with four birdies on the day and is looking to play the same way the rest of the week.

"This is a tough course," Amis said. "I can't expect to shoot this well this week but I know that I'm capable. I just need to stay relaxed and maybe take it under-par."

Tristan Lester of Plymouth, Mich., qualified with the only other under-par score of the day at 1-under 70. Paul Miller of Wheelersburg, Ohio, Shawn Marshall of North Vernon, Ind., and Matt Savage of Louisville, Ky., qualified with scores of even-par 71.

Also qualifying were C.J. Gatto of Columbus, Ohio, and Jon Merriott of Erie, Pa., at 72. Blake Russell of Dublin, Ohio, shot a 73 to qualify while Andrew Stephens of Fort Mitchell, Ky., and Matt Neusel of Dearborn, Mich., qualified with a pair of 75s.

Kyle Bush of Carmel, Ind., Michael Bruhn of Delaware, Ohio, and Chris Brock of Chillicothe, Ohio, fired 76s and qualified via playoff. Bush and Bruhn qualified with pars on the first playoff hole while Brock needed two playoff holes to qualify.

The 17-year-old Costello began the day just wanting to post a score in the 70s but tried for more after a clutch par on her second hole of the day.

"I made a good up-and-down on my second hole to start my round in a positive way," Costello said. "That hole gave me some extra confidence to shoot a good number."

Costello is looking for some more solid play to give her a high finish on Thursday.

"This course is different from what I'm used to playing," Costello said. "You've got to watch out for the high grass because you can get into trouble if you hit it out of the fairway."

Brittany Adams of Huntington, W.Va., carded a 79 and qualified via playoff by making a birdie on the first playoff hole.

First-round action for the AJGA Kroger Junior Invitational begins Tuesday morning at 7:00 a.m. at Elks Run Golf Club. For more information regarding the AJGA Kroger Junior Invitational or other AJGA events, please contact tournament headquarters at (513) 735-6600 ext. 12.
