JAMES LEE GRABS LEAD IN MIDLAND WITH A 3-UNDER 69
Brown and Hetzel share top spot in Girls Division

MIDLAND, Texas - James Lee of La Mirada, Calif., carded a 3-under 69 to sit atop of the leaderboard after the first round of the AJGA Compaq Junior All-Star Classic at Midland. Haley Brown of Austin, Texas, and Mallory Hetzel of Summerville, S.C., share the top spot in the Girls Division after recording 74s.

The 36-hole event, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, is in its first year at the par-72 Midland Country Club. The field features 84 players, including 68 boys and 16 girls.

Lee's round included four birdies and a bogey to garner the lead in just his second AJGA tournament.

"My iron shots and putting were good today," said Lee. "I have a lot of confidence and I want to win."

Following Lee in second place is James Minahan of Spring, Texas, who shot a 35-35--70. Minihan opened the round with four straight birdies, but a double bogey on No. 5 and a bogey on No. 6 has him trailing by a stroke.

"I kept it on the fairway and hit a lot of greens," said Minahan. "I'll continue to play solid and see what I can do tomorrow."

Steve Han of Diamond Bar, Calif., is in third place after carding a 37-34--71. "My goal was 3-under but I'm very satisfied with my round," Han said.

Sitting four strokes back are Mark Conlon of Arlington, Texas; Kenny Palmer of Scottsdale, Ariz; and Thomas Carlson of Sioux Falls, S.D.

Austin, Texas, native Haley Brown recovered from a double bogey on No. 1 to share the lead with Mallory Hetzel of Summerville, S.C., in the Girls Division. Hetzel credits her strong round on accuracy.

"I hit a lot of greens and hit the ball very solid," said the 14-year-old Hetzel. "Putting wise, I was stroking the ball well but they just weren't going down."

Brown's double bogey did not interrupt her concentration as she played the next eight holes at 1-under.

"I just took it one shot at a time and tried not to worry about what I'm doing on the leaderboard," said Brown. "We are all playing the golf course, not each other."

Heather Wright of Houston, Texas, and Reb Bareng of Muntinlupa, Philippines, are tied for third at 76.

Final-round action begins Thursday with tee times running from 8:00-10:06 a.m.
