DUNCAN DROPS A 7-UNDER PAR 65 TO LEAD PING MYRTLE BEACH FIELD

Kicklighter and Vander Lende tied at 71 in Girls Division

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Brian Duncan of Greenville, S.C., fired a 7-under-par 65 to take the first round lead at the AJGA PING Myrtle Beach Junior Classic. Ali Kicklighter of Deland, Fla., and Andrea Vander Lende of Longwood, Fla., each shot 1-under-par 71s to lead the Girls Division.

The 54-hole event, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, at the Myrtlewood Golf Club, PineHills Course, features 123 players, ages 13-18, representing 21 states, Canada and Puerto Rico. Past champions include Beth Bauer (1995-96) and Charles Howell (1995).

Duncan scorched the course for five birdies and an eagle en route to a one-stroke lead.

"I hit 16-of-18 greens," Duncan said. "I have always enjoyed this course. You can come out and shoot 72 or 60."

The Clemson University signee made the turn at 4-under-par 32 before finishing with a 3-under-par 33 on the back nine.

"Tomorrow is a new day and you can't focus on what happened the day before," Duncan said. "I'm going to try and forget about today and just go out and play golf."

Stephen Poole of Spartanburg, S.C., who will join Duncan at Clemson this fall, is chasing his future Tiger-mate after a first round 6-under-par 66. Poole carded nines of 31-35. Rounding out the top five are Matthew Mills of Bradenton, Fla., David Denham of Tifton, Ga., and Theo Betz of Upper Arlington, Ohio. Mills and Denham fired 4-under-par 68s while Betz carded a 69.

In the Girls Division, Kicklighter, 17, shot nines of 35-36 en route to a share of the first round lead.

"I played pretty well," Kicklighter said. "Tomorrow I need to hit my wedge shots closer so I don't miss putts."

Vander Lende, a University of Florida signee, posted nines of 34-37 on the day.

"On the front I had parred and bogeyed a few holes and I thought, 'I need to birdie some holes," Vander Lende said. "Then I birdied the next three holes and that is very important on this course because you have to go low to win."

Ashley Medders of Alma, Ga., sits in third and trails by two strokes at 73.
Second-round action begins Wednesday at Myrtlewood Golf Club, PineHills Course, with tee times running from 7:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. off the first tee.
