DUNCAN THREATENS TOURNAMENT RECORD
AT PING MYRTLE BEACH Cho leads trio by one shot in Girls Division
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.-Brian Duncan of Greenville,
S.C., picked up where he left off yesterday with a 6-under-par
66 to grab a five-shot lead after the second round in
the Boys Division of the AJGA PING Myrtle Beach Junior
Classic. Mickey Cho leads the Girls Division at 1-over-par
145.
The 54-hole event, conducted by the American Junior
Golf Association at the Myrtlewood Golf Club, PineHills
Course, features 123 players, ages 13-18, representing
21 states, Canada, England and Puerto Rico. Past champions
include Beth Bauer (1995-96) and Charles Howell (1995).
Duncan followed up his first-round score of 7-under
65 with a 66 on nines of 35-31. Duncan birdied Nos.
1 and 3, but back-to-back bogeys dropped him back to
even-par on his round. However, he proceeded to birdie
six of eight holes starting on No. 8. He currently sits
at 13-under-par after 36 holes, and is on pace to break
or tie the 54-hole tournament record set last year by
Chan Song Wonglukiet of Bradenton, Fla.
"I couldn't play a whole lot better," said
the 18-year-old Duncan. "I'm hitting the ball as
well as I ever have, and my putts are falling. A couple
of months ago, the putts weren't falling."
Duncan attested that his round could've been better,
but he missed three putts inside of eight feet. He hit
only 5-of-14 fairways, but managed to hit 16-of-18 greens.
In two days, Duncan has hit 32-of-36 greens in regulation.
"I've been hitting it close, and putting the ball
in position to score," said Duncan, a Clemson University
signee. "I was fortunate to recover after the bogeys
on the front nine and I caught fire on the back."
Duncan leads Matthew Mills of London, England, and
Jeff Overton of Evansville, Ind., by five shots. Mills,
who has hit 33-of-36 greens in regulation, shot his
second consecutive 4-under-par 68, and has only one
bogey through the first two days. Overton turned in
the low round of the day with a 65, and is tied for
second with Mills at 8-under 136. Duncan Street of Bonita,
Calif., and Tom Lefebvre of Camp Lejeune, N.C., are
tied for fourth at 138.
In the Girls Division, Mickey Cho of Wesley Chapel,
Fla., carded a 3-under-par 69 to grab a one-shot lead
at 1-over-par 145. Cho, 18, used an eagle on the 360-yard,
par four 12th hole, when she holed out a six-iron from
155 yards to highlight her day.
"I stayed pretty calm after that," said Cho.
"I still had a lot of holes to play."
Cho, who shot a 76 yesterday, also had three birdies
in her round to offset two bogeys.
"I missed a lot of short putts, but I am happy
with my round," said Cho. "This has been my
best opportunity to win, so I am going to have fun and
try to play well as the leader."
Andrea Vander Lende of Longwood, Fla., Ali Kicklighter
of Deland, Fla., and defending champion Ashley Hoagland
of Palmetto, Fla., and are all tied at 2-over-par 146.
Kicklighter and Vander Lende, who shared the first-round
lead at 1-under, shot 75, while Hoagland fired a 1-under-par
71.
Action concludes Thursday at the Myrtlewood Golf Club,
PineHills Course, with tee times starting at 7 a.m.
off the first tee. For more information, contact AJGA
