AJGA OSSO JUNIOR AT OAK TREE
Oak Tree Country Club, East Course
Edmond, Okla.
June 25-28, 2001
BACA CLAIMS SECOND AJGA TITLE WITH WIN AT OAK TREE
Melton comes back from four down to win Girls Division
EDMOND, Okla. - Ryan Baca of Richmond, Texas,
shot a final-round 7-over-par 77 to win the Boys Division
of the AJGA OSSO Junior at Oak Tree by two shots. In
the Girls Division, Nicole Melton of San Antonio, Texas,
survived a windy back nine and a one-hole playoff with
Cindy Shin of Coppell, Texas to claim the title.
The 54-hole event, conducted by the American Junior
Golf Association at Oak Tree Country Club's East Course,
featured 144 players, ages 13-18, representing 21 states.
Baca entered the day with a one-shot lead over Norman,
Okla., native Ryan Rainer before extending his lead
with a birdie on the 415-yard par-4 third hole after
knocking a wedge inside of 10-feet. The Baylor signee
managed to maintain his narrow lead over the field the
rest of the way and held on to garner his second career
AJGA win, despite finishing with a pair of bogeys.
"I didn't know where I stood coming into No. 18,
so I just played it like any other hole," the 18-year-old
said. " I played a pretty solid tournament until
the last round, but I'm happy with the win. I didn't
think I had it down the stretch, but everyone else was
struggling too and I held on."
Brian Edick of Valencia, Calif., fired a 72 to jump
into second place with a 218. Pete Krsnich of Wichita,
Kan., and Will Armstrong of Austin, Texas, tied for
third with a three-day total of 219. Garrett of Houston,
Texas, finished fifth with a 220 after shooting a final-round
79.
Melton carded a 5-over-par 75 to finish the tournament
at 224 in the Girls Division and force a playoff with
Shin, who came into the final round with a four-shot
lead. Shin finished with a 79, but got up-and-down from
the back of the green on No. 18 to save par and regain
a share of the lead. In the one-hole playoff, Melton
hit her second shot within six feet of the hole and
made par while Shin was unable to convert her par putt
to give Melton her second career AJGA victory.
"It's a nice win," Melton said. "I really
wanted to win here because I'm so close to home and
I had a lot of family here watching."
After bogeys on Nos. 6 and 7, Melton sunk a 5-foot
putt for birdie on No.8 to close within one shot of
the lead. After the turn, the Texas A & M signee
survived a handful of bogeys and made par when it counted
in the playoff to get the win.
"I tried to be aggressive as I could be with the
wind," the 18-year-old said. "I didn't want
to lose the tournament on the front, so I pretty much
played for par and was able to survive."
Kelly Robb of Concord, Mass., finished a shot back
in third at 74-75-76--225. Erin Tone of Gilbert, Ariz.,
finished fourth with a total of 73-77-80--230 and Ponca
City, Okla., native Michaela Cavener rounded out the
top five with a 76-81-74--231.
