SPRADLIN EARNS MEDALIST HONORS AT OKLAHOMA QUALIFIER
Kobayashi fills Girl Division spot with a 71

EDMOND, Okla. - Jeff Spradlin of Leawood, Kan., and Mayumi Kobayashi of Santa Monica, Calif., shot their way into the field for the AJGA OSSO Junior at Oak Tree during Sunday's qualifier. Spradlin fired an even-par 70 to claim medalist honors in the Boys Division, while Kobayashi shot at 1-over-par 71 to claim the top spot in the Girls Division.

The 18-hole qualifier, part of the Pepsi Qualifier Series presented by ClubCorp, was conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Oak Tree Country Club, East Course, and featured 88 juniors representing nine states, including 69 from Oklahoma and Texas.

Spradlin carded four birdies on his way to earning one of the six available spots into the tournament field in the Boys Division, including back-to-back birdies on Nos. 9 and 10 to put him at 1-under-par for his round.

"I played the same pretty much all round," the 18-year-old Spradlin said. "I didn't try and do anything special. Those birdies got my round going because I was hanging around par up until then."

After a bogey on No. 8, Spradlin recovered on the 436-yard par-4 ninth, sticking his approach shot within 10 feet and draining the birdie. Then on No. 9, the Wichita State signee hit a wedge within five feet and tapped in for another birdie to get him back to even-par at the turn.

Also qualifying in the Boys Division were Miles Terry of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Nathan Coats of Ponca City, Oklahoma with a pair of 3-over 73s. The final three spots were decided by a one-hole playoff after six boys carded 74s, with Zach Drennan, of San Angelo, Calif., Mitch Cohmia of Tulsa, Okla., and Cody Chance of Lumberton, Texas, claiming the final three boys spots.

In the Girls Division, Kobayashi's 71 was good enough to claim the only available qualifying spot. The 14-year-old started off her round with a birdie on the par-4 306-yard 18th hole, draining a 40-footer from the front fringe.

"That putt made me calm down and gave me confidence in my putting for the rest of the round," Kobayashi said. "There was a lot of wind today which made things tough, but my short game was very good today."

The AJGA OSSO Junior at Oak Tree will feature of field of 144 boys and girls, ages 13-18, representing 20 states. The 54-hole event will be conducted at the Oak Tree Country Club, East Course, and begins Tuesday, June 26, with tee times running from 7:30 a.m. - 9:09 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. - 1:39 p.m. off the first and 10th tees.
