ALLISON MARTIN TAKES OVER GIRLS DIVISION LEAD
Lanier remains Boys Division leader after even-par round

TEMPE, Ariz. - Allison Martin of Bakersfield, Calif., will spend her 16th birthday gunning for her fourth AJGA title of the summer after shooting her second consecutive 71 to take a three-shot lead in the AJGA PING Phoenix Junior Championship. In the Boys Division, Jeff Lanier of Austin, Texas, maintained his first-round lead by shooting a 72, good for a one-shot lead

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the AJGA PING Phoenix Junior Championship features a field of 85 junior golfers, ages 13-18, representing 13 states and includes 10 players from Arizona. Included in this week's field at the Karsten Golf Course at ASU are seven Polo Golf Junior All-Americans. Past winners of this event include Tiger Woods, Emilee Klein, Grace Park and Heather Bowie.

Martin followed up a 36 on the front nine with a 35 on the back side to overtake first-round leader Jane Lee of Torrance, Calif.

After a bogey on 14, Martin wasted no time bouncing back with birdies on Nos. 15 and 16.

"The bogey on 14 shouldn't have happened," Martin said. "I made a mental mistake and left a chip short and then three-putted. I knew I wasted shots on that hole and it made me mad. I knew I had to get back into the game after that and make something happen. I just focused on the next two holes and made some birdies."

Martin heads into Sunday's final round as its leader, a position that she has not only become accustomed to, but thrived in.

"I just play like it's a new round of golf," said Martin, who holds a thee-shot lead over Lee. "The past is history and if you go out and protect the lead you're not going to play as aggressive or make aggressive swings. Jane has been putting well all week and in order to keep the lead I'm going to have to putt well myself."

Joining Martin and Park atop the Girls Division leaderboard are Walailak Satarak of Paramount, Calif., and Jennie Lee of Huntington Beach, Calif., at 147, five shots back.

In the Boys Division, Sunday's final round will test who can breakout from a tightly grouped field, led by Lanier.

Lanier got off to a strong start with an eagle on the par-5 No. 5 and recovered from a bogey on No. 6 to birdie No. 7 and finish out the front nine with a 34.

"I had a good front nine," said the 17-year-old Lanier. "I felt like I had some good momentum coming off of number 7, but that just didn't carryover into anything.

"I missed a lot of birdie putts on the back nine and I missed the last five greens. I just need to make putts. Yesterday I made putts and today I didn't"

Being in the final group is nothing new to Lanier, but this time the Texan is looking for a different result.

"I've been in the leader group before, but I've failed to play as well as I wanted to," said Lanier whose best finish is a tie for third. "In the past I've approached the last round as its different instead of playing as I had."
Chasing Lanier and his 138 tournament total will be Pansing Singhaseni of Beverly Hills, Calif., at 139, Peter Campbell of Encinitas, Calif., and Anthony Kim of La Quinta, Calif., at 140 and Spencer Levin of Elk Grove Calif., at 141.

Final-round action will begin on Sunday with tee times running from 6:30-8:36 a.m. off of the No. 1 and 10 tees.
